100 years ago

February 15, 1917

• The finishing touches are being put on the interior work of the new counting room of the Wallowa National bank, which will move in sometime in the next 10 days. The bank has had only one cashier in its history, Mr. Holmes. It was the second bank established in the county, the First Bank of Joseph being the first.

• Going in a special train Saturday evening, most of the members of the Enterprise lodge, Knights of Pythias, will attend the annual district convention of the order to be held at Wallowa. The train will leave Enterprise at 6:30 p.m. and return after midnight. The round trip will cost $1.25.

• Five Enterprise men climbed to Aneroid lake in the high mountains on skiis the first of the week and brought back two large brook trout to prove their story. No great difficulties or hardships were encountered and the jaunt was full of novelty and harmless adventure.

• This is the last week that lunches will be served at the school building. The lunch room has never been a paying proposition and it takes up a great deal of time on the part of the domestic science girls and consequently is not operated except during the most severe weather of the winter.

• The 17 elk shipped from Wallowa County two weeks ago arrived at their destinations in Western Oregon in excellent condition, and are now getting acquainted with their new homes.

70 years ago

February 13, 1947

• The Glenn Trump house in Minam was utterly destroyed by fire early Monday morning. The contents were also lost. The children (6, 4 & 2) had been left in the house alone while the parents were at the neighbor’s and were rescued with only seconds to spare.

• Approximately 400 boxing fans turned out at the Enterprise High School gym Saturday night to see a card of 10 bouts staged between fistic talent from the FFA at Wallowa and the chapter at Enterprise.

• Ed Tippett is now operating taxi service in Enterprise with headquarters at the Enterprise hotel. Don Reece is driving the taxi.

• Knitters are badly needed to work up Red Cross yarn into children’s sweaters. The ladies are at work at the Red Cross rooms cutting out woolen dresses for girls, and as soon as a sufficient number are cut out, sewers are asked to report for work.

• Some lumber is already on the grounds for the erection of the new plumbing shop which Orren P. Foster will build on the lot of River Street just north of the post office.

50 years ago

February 16, 1967

• John Alford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Alford, won the Joseph FFA public speaking contest last Thursday and represented his chapter in the district contest in La Grande. Dan Tippett placed second in the senior division and Chuck Akin third. First in the junior division was Mike Shirley; second, Dennis Brennan; and third, Steve Allison.

• Due to mild winter weather and lack of adequate snow, the snowmobile races scheduled for this Sunday near the ski tow have been postponed indefinitely, according to Bill Coffin, Enterprise chamber president.

• Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Depew lost their barn and shop by fire the same day they moved to Lostine. Three fire trucks combated the fire ,which was assumed started by faulty wiring.

• Sue Coppin, a senior at Joseph, was chosen last week as the Joseph FFA Chapter Sweetheart. A contest was held in which each of four girls competed for the honor by driving several nails, sawing a board, boring a hole, driving a tractor and answering questions. Other contestants were Sandi Buckley, Lanette Burnette and Donna Norton.

• Aaron Guest has compiled an impressive 13-2 win-loss record for Enterprise during the course of the regular wrestling schedule. Guest lost his first 2 matches of the season, but since then he has won 13 straight with 12 of them being by pins.

25 years ago

February 13, 1992

• The majority of politicians who want to represent the residents of Northeast Oregon say they are opposed to a proposed national park unveiled last week by the Hells Canyon Preservation Council.

• A couple, Bob and Joni Sedlock, who spent almost 40 years in Alaska took over ownership and management of one of the county’s social centers – the Lostine Tavern – last month from Marvin and Evelyn Lovell.

• Photo caption: Clarence Stonebrink, 84, still spends time in the shop where for more than 20 years he has been inventing equipment for the Stonebrink family farm. He recently was honored for his ingenuity as the winner of an inventor’s contest sponsored by the Oregon Farm Bureau.

• Imnaha: A change in the weather pattern was welcomed by everyone. The thermometer rose to 70 degrees one day, with night temperatures at the frost level.

• Three Enterprise girl players (Monique Renoe, Erika Black and Shelley Anderson) turned in double-figure scoring performances against Grant Union Friday night, as the home team Savages scored a come-from- behind win over the Prospectors.

• Both the Enterprise and Joseph boy teams clinched District 8 2-A playoff berths last weekend. In the Old Oregon League, Wallowa held on to first place.
