Wallowa-Whitman Forest officials on Friday re-opened several campgrounds that were previously closed due to the Indian Crossing Fire near Halfway.

The fire was first reported Aug. 27 and is located 15 miles north of Halfway, along the Imnaha River near Indian Crossing Campground. As of Sunday morning, it covered 95 acres and was 85 percent contained.

Officials on Thursday announced that FS Road 3960 (Upper Imnaha Road) and Trail 1860 would be accessible Friday, Sept. 2. Indian Crossing, Hidden Campgrounds and the trail head and Coverdale Campground also opened the same day.

Though campgrounds are open, visitors can still expect to see increased firefighting traffic on the road and around Indian Crossing Campground and trailhead area.

The fire was caused by human activity, according to an incident summary from forest officials.

About 100 personnel worked the fire, including one Hotshot crew, three Type 2 crews and three engines.
