A series of turnovers sunk the Wallowa football team in its 46-14 loss to Adrian on Friday at Powder Valley.

The loss dropped the Cougars from second to third in the OSAA Class 1A rankings. The game was played for the purpose of determining postseason seedings. Adrian will enter the state playoffs as the No. 1 seed, while the Cougars go in as the No. 3 seed.

Wallowa started the game strong, coming out of the first quarter with a 14-6 lead thanks to a 58-yard touchdown run by Chandler Burns and a 64-yard pass play from Gus Ramsden to Koby Frye later in the quarter. The Cougars would not score again.

Wallowa led in total yards — 339 to 327 — but three lost fumbles and an interception sealed the Cougars’ fate.

Chandler Burns led all Wallowa rushers with 94 yards on 13 touches, and Noah Allen racked up 86 yards on 13 carries. Koby Frye connected on 2 of 8 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown, while Noah Allen went 1-1 for 19 yards passing.

“You can’t turn over the ball four times — and they didn’t have any,” coach Matt Brockamp said. “You take away those mistakes and maybe the outcome is different.” The Cougars (6-2) open the state playoffs with a home game at 1 p.m. Saturday against 14-seed Triad, a private Christian school in Klamath Falls.
