- Kathleen Ellyn/ChieftainFor a couple of hours it seemed like the Enterprise High School football season was over.
The good news keeps coming.
After the destruction of the Enterprise High School field house and all football gear Thursday morning, prompting fears of a canceled season, individuals and organizations began stepping up.
Local businessman Greg Bales, parent of EHS football player Trent Bales, immediately called a fellow who knew a fellow and new uniforms were on the way by noon of the day of the fire.
“Bill Hall, a landowner in Joseph used to work for Nike,” Bales said. “I called him and he called Nike and Nike has stepped up. They say they can have new uniforms to us by tomorrow.”
Enterprise High School Football Booster Club President and Wresting Coach Troy Farwell reported on Friday that uniform and shoe sizes were sent to Nike and Jerseys and shoes have been shipped. The school also ordered new pads and helmets.
“Some items are coming in now and the team is hoping to get all the gear by next Wednesday, Oct. 14, so that a contact practice can take place before the home game against Burns Oct. 16,” Farwell said.
A gofundme account was also set up to replace the field house.
“Any donations to that, or directly to the Enterprise Educational Foundation (EED), are tax deductible,” said EED Foundation President Cindi Aschenbrenner. The gofundme account has a $10K goal. It can be accessed at https://www.gofundme.com/kd5zzsn4
Additional contributions continue to come directly to the foundation. Aschenbrenner reports that the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has donated $2,000, the Enterprise Fire Department (EFD) donated $1,000, and Video Buffs of Enterprise donated $1,000 in memory of Nicole Wynn.
“And there are three more checks I’m supposed to pick up today,” Aschenbrenner said.
An electrical short behind the ice machine caused the Oct. 8 fire. It was discovered and reported by Marcie Teeney of Joseph, who was working on the spectator stands, preparing them for the planned Oct. 9 homecoming game.
The old building was made of wood, the ceiling of plywood, and was fully engulfed in flame when the combined Enterprise and Joseph Fire Departments responded. The building was torn down later that day with all contents a total loss.
