The young Wallowa Cougars volleyball team is still dealing with consistency issues, but they’re improving fast and remain one of the top teams to watch for sheer determination.

In their out against the number 39 ranked Pine Eagle Spartans on Oct. 2 they struggled to keep their intensity, said Coach Janea Hulse.

“We seemed to gain momentum and then lose it,” she said. “I saw a lot of good from these girls despite the (eventual) loss.”

The team took the third game in close combat, winding up with a pretty impressive series (25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 25-17).

They were out the injured Jordan Ferre and the team is still learning to play different positions, but the coaches like what they’re seeing.

“I’m proud of them,’ said Hulse.

Coaches praised Rylee Goller, who had three kills in the game and then moved to defense where she led on digs and receptions with a total of 45 passes.

Beth Johnston was another standout with 11 kills and two solo blocks.

Riley Ferre also impressed with two kills and 17 assists against the Spartans.

“Riley Ferre is growing as a setter and amazes me every game,” Hulse said.

The very next day, Oct. 3, the Cougars went up against the OSAA number 28 ranked Joseph Eagles and won two of their five games (17-25, 25-6, 25-15, 21-25, 15-8).

“The girls came out strong and fighting as a team,” Hulse said. “As long as they play as a team, their opportunities are endless.”

It was a bad game for injuries, however, with Beth Johnston and Rylee Goller colliding for injuries to both.

Notable play was made by Grace Pendarvis, who scored 8 serves in a row and totaled 23 serves in the game with 4 aces.

Oriana Wandschneider played her most aggressive game to date and Mary Beth was also praised for her good defense.

Their next game is a return against the number 17 ranked Echo Cougars on Oct. 6. The Wallowa Cougars are OSAA ranked number 48 at this time.
