Wallowa County’s three-school softball team, the Cubs, lost a pair of one-run games Friday, April 24, to the Riverside/Arlington Pirates, 13-12 and 10-9. The Cubbies are now 5-3 in league play.
“Both of them were good ball games. We just came out on the short end of it. They had better hits at the right time,” Cubs coach Cliff Conrad said.
Both games went the full seven innings. In the first game the Cubs went ahead late, scoring five runs in the top of the sixth. Arlington answered with four in the bottom of the sixth, however. In the second game the Wallowa County ladies were ahead 9-6 going into the bottom of the seventh, whereupon the Pirates scored four to pull it out.
The Cubs had 11 hits in the first game, nine in the nightcap.
Individual accomplishments in the opener included Madison Plew hitting a two-run homer in the first inning, Darby Gassett going 3-for-5, and Rachel Frolander’s two hits, including a bases-clearing single (3 RBIs) late in the game. Frolander also went 2-for-4 in the second game with an RBI. Macey Frei and Kristyn Young each went 2-for-4 in the second game, also with two RBIs each.
Natalie Williams pitched the first game allowing 11 hits and a walk and striking out four. Plew threw in the second game, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits with 2 strikeouts and 5 walks.
League action continues this weekend with the Elgin/Imbler Huskies coming to town on Friday. The Huskies are 6-2 in league with the Cubs trailing them by one game in the standings.
