Public Transit operations in Wallowa, Union and Baker counties announced they will provide free rides for people age 60 and over to and from meals at the Enterprise, Wallowa, La Grande and Baker City dining centers during the month of May.
The free transport to dining centers is offered in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act. May is Older Americans Month, and this year’s theme is “Get Into the Act.”
Meals in Enterprise and Wallowa are served Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Meals on Wheels are also available.
People from all age groups are invited and encouraged to enjoy a nutritious meal and a chance to make new friends, along with other opportunities to become involved. There is also community-based assistance available for those that qualify.
In Wallowa, Union and Baker counties, Community Connection Public Transit will provide nearly 80,000 rides this year, two-fifths of them to seniors.
Frank Thomas, transit manager in La Grande, said, “Many people are unaware we got our start as a traditional senior bus program. This was a fantastic way to honor our community members while celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act and our agency’s elder program roots.”
