Longtime Wallowa County Resident, Glenn Allen, died peacefully in his sleep Jan. 8, 2015, close to the home of his son, John Allen, in Myrtle Creek. Called “Cy” by everyone who knew him, he was born on the home ranch near Lostine, May 27, 1915. He lived there until 1964. He, his wife, Dora, and their twins Greg and Grace then moved to Milton-Freewater.
One of the last real cowboys of the time he rode and trained horses all his life, was still riding at age 95. He won many trophies for trail riding, team penning and carried the American Flag in several Pendleton Round-Up parades. In 1946 he and Dora started a horse riding club for kids called “The Liberty Buckaroos.” They taught many kids to ride and care for their horses. The club remained for almost 20 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, the former Dora Mae Hetrick in 2012, children, Grace 1986, Greg 2012 and stepson James in 1979. He is survived by son, John and his wife, Myrna, their children, Darwin and Debbie. Daughter, Glenda, her children Teresa and James. Grandchildren, Becky, James, Jess, Randy, Chris and Donna. Several great-grandchildren and one special little great-great-grandson Kashton Allen, age 3, who spent time and talked to Cy every day until the end.
