The Wallowa County Fairgrounds in Enterprise will ring with music from noon to 10 p.m. and possibly later Saturday, Aug. 30, when the 6th Annual Juniper Jam music festival unfolds on two adjacent stages.
As in years past, both the Main Stage and Tunesmith Stage – at staggered intervals – will feature rising musical talents from inside and outside the area playing original music. Bands this year are coming from such distant locales as Austin, Texas; Nashville, Tenn.; and Los Angeles.
The only holdover from the 2013 event, sponsored as always by the Wallowa Valley Music Alliance, is a Portland-based group named Bitterroot. Bitterroot possesses the ability to energize crowds with the group’s uplifting mix of folk, rock, blues, and soul music.
The headline act for the festival, set to take the Main Stage at 8:40 p.m. that evening, is a seven-person band from Seattle named Cody Beebe and the Crooks. Beebe and peers perform soft rock music that delves into the musical arenas of Americana and blues.
Another Main Stage performer, filling Juniper Jam’s traditional niche as a western band, is Zoe Muth and the Lost High Rollers. Originally from the Pacific Northwest and best known as a songwriter, Muth has spent the past three years touring the United States and Europe, and now works out of Austin.
Another Main Stage performing group, based in Los Angeles, is Jeff Crosby and the Refugees. Juniper Jam Festival Director Janis Carper describes Crosby as an “excellent songwriter” who gives “a really great performance.” The earliest of the five Main Stage performances Saturday, beginning at 2:05 p.m., will be given by Hollow Wood, of Boise. Hollow Wood plays a variety of eclectic folk music.
Gates will open at noon. The event offers food, drinks, and children’s activities. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and warmer evening attire.
A round-robin trio of upcoming songwriters will launch the day’s music at 1 p.m. on the smaller Tunesmith Stage. Those three artists include Tracy Spring, of Bellingham, Wash., and Enterprise-based performers Heidi Muller and MidLo.
Other groups that will perform on the Tunesmith Stage include Kathryne Claire, of Seattle; Kai Welch, of Nashville; and local bands Saigon County and Sorry, Neighbors.
Tickets may be purchased at the gate, or in advance at Joseph Hardware; in Enterprise at Lear’s and The Bookloft; or at M. Crow & Co., in Lostine.
