Eagle Point, Ore.– Fire crews from all around Southern Oregon and other parts of the country helped try and contain a 100 acre wildfire that threatened homes in Eagle Point.

Jackson County Fire District 3 said lightning started the fire. The fire did burn close to homes, threatening 15-20 but Fire District 3 said they were all protected by fire engines.

A plume of smoke was seen from Highway 62 at around 6:00 p.m. Monday. The fire started in the area of the 4000 block of Rogue River Drive.

Four helicopters and two air tankers were making drops from the air.Several resources were in the area helping with the Oregon Gulch Fire.

“We’re strategically placing resources around the area. These happen to be in staging so that was the reason for the quick reflex time to get everybody up here,” said Don Hickman with Fire District 3.

Hickman also said the fire is in an area with a lot of dry timber and that was one of the challenges with the fire.

Rogue River Road where it meets with highway 234 is closed to anyone who doesn’t live in the area, until further notice.
