Yreka, Ca. — Yreka businesses are stepping up and taking care of firefighters battling fires in Northern California. Some preparing hundreds, even thousands of meals. On a normal day, Bill and Ondia Durovchic are serving sandwiches by the dozens to their neighbors in Yreka. Today they’re packing hundreds of lunches for firefighters returning from the front lines during a busy wildfire season. The sign reads closed, but inside Klander’s Deli on Oregon street in Yreka, there’s a flurry of activity. Bill and Ondia Durovchic are preparing hundreds of lunches for firefighters battling wildfires in Northern California. “Monday they wanted 100 then they asked us for 300 a day for the rest of the week,” said Bill Durovchic. All those lunches led them to make the decision to close their doors to the public, as they pack the meals. “Fortunate for us that our business is making lunches, that we’re adaptable to doing this for the firefighters for the county, for everybody involved,” said Durovchic. Their effort and the efforts of others in the community hasn’t been lost on the crews fighting the fires. “To feel that support coming home from the end of a long 24 hours shift is pretty nice,” said Drew Bohan. “There’s signs lining the roads that say ‘thank you firefighters’ and that’s very appreciative to all these men and women who have been out there aggressively fighting fires they come home and see this every night,” said Jeff Larusso. With another 300 meals already ordered for Friday, the Durovchic’s say they’re just doing their part to keep the men and women on the front lines happy and healthy. “It takes a lot of people, and we’re just a couple more in the community,” said Durovchic. The Durovchics say Klander’s Deli is compensated for the help provided to fire crews but they say they would likely help the effort regardless.
