A stage line was established this week between Enterprise and Flora by Walter Applegate. The stage leaves Flora every Monday and Friday morning. Returning, it leaves Enterprise at 7:30 oclock each Tuesday and Saturday, leaving the E.M.&M. store and the Enterprise stable. The passenger fare is $3 one way and $5 round trip.

A new road leading from Leap to Enterprise was ordered by the county court at its session on Monday. The proceedings were the first taken in the county under the law passed by the legislature of 1913, giving the court authority on its own motion to establish a needed road and to pay the damages. Farmers living in the hills, in the Chapman district and clear on to Leap, have been trying for several years to get the road through.

Quietly and without any demonstration, the work of throwing up a grade for the new railroad from Enterprise to the north was begun yesterday by crews of the East Oregon Lumber Co.

EDITORIAL It is a pleasure to note that the patronage of the public library in Enterprise is growing steadily. There are not as many books as the board would like to see on the shelves, but additions are being made frequently. As time goes on the institution will grow from this small beginning into something to be proud of; and all the while it is a force for education and culture in the community.

Wallowa County has gone over the top in the fifth War Loan drive. Sales this week reached $321,948, or approximately $30,000 over the $291,000 quota. Sales of E bonds to individuals, however, continue to lag.

ALDER SLOPE Jim Henderson has written an interesting book of 108 pages about the life of his family, which friends here are enjoying very much. The book tells about the family during the civil war, crossing the plains with a covered wagon and all the early history of Wallowa County.

The Baker Oregon Trail Days horse auction this week saw 167 horses sold through the ring for more than $50,000. The highest bid, which was rejected, was a $3,000 offer made to Truman Poulson of Enterprise for his quarter horse stallion. Quarter horses are a relatively new saddle horse breed and are known for their stamina and speed in working with cattle.

IMNAHA Owing to the labor shortage, the farmers are exchanging work. Jack Rugge and his shearing crew have been helping hay on the river and Vern Warnock and Bill Maxwell went to Wild Horse, 57 miles north of Enterprise, to help shear the Huffman and Cherry Creek Sheep Co. sheep.

State Representative Don McKinnis, Summerville, reporting on a conversation with supervisor of the State Highway Department, told the Chieftain that the state will construct a well-built highway capable of handling heavy trucks and equipment over a 25-mile stretch, reaching from Imnaha to the powerhouse site of the Mt. Sheep Dam.

IMNAHA An oncoming car from Pendleton nearly caused a head-on collision on Sheep Creek road when Garrett Lovell, driving a new Dodge pickup, took to the bar pit to avoid it. The driver of the oncoming car was apparently interested in watching deer on the hillside.

Used Car for Sale 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air 2-dr. htp. Good condition. Low miles. Only $350. Phone 734, Enterprise.

Things may have been relatively uneventful over the 4th of July weekend throughout most of Wallowa County, but according to Rod Polly, superintendent of the Wallowa Lake State Park things were really going full blast there. He reported this was the biggest 4th of July weekend ever experienced at the park. On the 4th the registration was 295 camper vehicles. The capacity of the campground is 147. Some of the overflow was allowed to camp in the picnic area.
