Vancouver police identified the motorcycle officer shot Monday during a routine traffic stop as Dustin Goudschaal. Police say Goudschaal, 32, was shot multiple times and is still being treated a local hospital. As of Tuesday morning, he is stable condition.
The Columbian reported late Monday morning that Goudschaal pulled over a vehicle in East Vancouver before being shot. Police say the vehicle was stolen.
When Goudschaal didn’t respond to a dispatcher, a nearby resident replied on the radio that the officer had been shot. One suspect was caught by police minutes after the shooting, but officers spent about two hours tracking down the second suspect who was detained around 1:30 p.m., according to police.
Police later identified one of the suspects as James Todd Sapp, 47, who is expected to appear in court Tuesday.
Goudschaal has been with Vancouver Police Department since 2008 and has served as a motorcycle cop since September 2013. Previously, he worked as a police officer for the University of Arizona Police Department.
