Coquille chess club hosts tournament

The Coquille Chess Club held the first of two summer chess tournaments June 21, at LaVerne Park, in Coquille. Twenty chess players of all ages enjoyed playing in the outdoors. They also enjoyed a potluck between rounds.
In the over-900 rating division, reigning champion junior Aaron Grabinsky beat all his opponents. Sixth-grader Joshua Grabinsky took second while freshman Josiah Perkins and adult Mark Claiborne tied for third.
In the under-900 rating division, fifth-grader Logan Hill and sixth-grader Bridget Perry tied for first place. Adult Arnold Hill, junior Tyler Overby and fifth-grader Dustin Keleman were only half a point behind.
