Farmers from the far north end of the county were thick in Enterprise last week. A carload of hogs was brought from Lost Prairie. The men who came with them were George Cannon, sons Everett and Vern, Fred Botts, Lorenzo Bacon, and Guy and Arley Fordice. George Cannon has been down with hogs so often that he thought it was time he gave the boys a chance to see the city.
Fred Mitchell, who died as the result of a kick by a horse, was buried last Thursday in Prairie Creek cemetery. The funeral was held at the Mitchell farm house, just east of Joseph, Rev. J.R. Payne conducting the service.
T.R. Ain has come back from the Imnaha, where he went to explore further the placer gold claim owned by him and his brother H.D. He brought back a sack of black sand, which was intermingled with very alluring pieces of real gold gathered on the claim.
The gusty days of the first of the week emphasized the need of some treatment for Enterprise streets to lay the dust. Other towns which have used oil report the results have been excellent. Two or three applications of oil a season have been found sufficient to keep the streets hard and dry.

Several hundred people were alert enough to be on hand last Thursday morning to witness the departure of the bomber which had been grounded at the local golf course for the previous two weeks. If the army had any expectations of getting the plane away secretly, they were not sufficiently cognizant of the perspicacity of the Wallowa County citizenry or something.
PARADISE Part of the community was hit by a hail storm Monday, the Paradise ridge being hit the hardest. Most of the grain crop was damaged. Gardens and fruit crops were chopped up and even small chickens were killed. Farmers being hit the hardest were Harold and Clifford Kuhn, Dale Beach, Albert and Kermit Wilson and Bale Shelton. The stones were clear ice and about the size of a small egg.
JOSEPH Henry Mitchell has traded his residence and buildings and 10-acre tract on the Armin market road near Joseph to Fred Marks for his place across the highway. The Marks place, the former Guy Mitchell place, has 30 acres of land, most of which is in pasture.
TROY Hard rains fell again Sunday causing the Wallowa road to wash out quit badly in two places. Haying has started on the river with Willard Mallory and Fred Richman mowing alfalfa.

Liquidation of the J. Herbert Bate Co., sawmill at Wallowa was announced last week by Edward Potter of the Milton J. Wershow Co., a professional liquidator of industrial properties. His firm has purchased the personal property at the mill and all the J. Herbert Bate residences in Wallowa at a figure well in the six figures.
The Wallowa County Library Board held a special meeting Monday evening and selected Mrs. Mabel Osborne of Wallowa as Wallowa County Librarian. This is a new position created as the result of the May election. Eleven applications were received.
An additional 13,083 acres of land has been added to the Eagle Cap Wilderness area of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest under an agreement with the Chief Joseph Lumber Co. just concluded. The land was held under private ownership through mining claims acquired in 1925 by the original patentees.
Photo caption Ron Clegg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Clegg, was all smiles after he returned to Enterprise last weekend with a beautiful trophy he won at the Oregon Junior Golf Tournament, held last week in Tualatin. Clegg defeated Steven Groff of Salem 1-up to win first in the 11th flight of the boys division.

Wallowa County had the distinction of being the home of both the vocal and instrumental winners in the State Grange Talent Contest held in Enterprise Tuesday. Winners were vocalist Gary Moffit of Lostines South Fork Grange and county fiddling champion Charles Trump of the Wallowa Grange.
Last summer two hot-air balloons traveled over from Lewiston to take part in the Enterprise Chamber of Commerces annual Crazy Daze celebration. This Crazy Daze a dozen balloons from four states will fill the sky with color for what is now the Wallowa Mountain High balloon rally Friday and Saturday, July 7 and 8.
After riding his way to high scores all season, Mark Nichols, 16, Joseph won the title of Rookie of the Year at the Oregon High School Rodeo Association finals in Redmond this week. Local teammates on the new Eastern Oregon High School Rodeo team are Dusty Palmer, Justin Nedrow, Brent Black and John Schnetzky, all of Enterprise.
Photo caption The first substantial rain in over two weeks fell Thursday, the same day the Enterprise City Swimming Pool opened for the season, but failed to dampen the enthusiasm of 35 youngsters who inaugurated the pool. Lifeguards Alicia Roberts and Orenda Christy and pool manager Dena Fordice put in the first day on the job equipped with umbrellas.

Tippett and Wendell Burleigh; back, John McFetridge, groom James Dorrance, bride Elvaree Jacob, Dave Warnock and Bill Barry. According to the old caption, the couple was married June 5, 1927, and promptly seized by the group of friends and treated to a charivari ride around town.
