Hundreds attended Jared Padgett’s memorial service Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gresham.
The 15-year-old shot and killed fellow student Emilio Hoffman and wounded teacher Todd Rispler before killing himself at Reynolds High School last Tuesday.
Deon Strommer is the spokesman for the Padgett family. He says the parents are devastated by what their son did and have apologized to the families of the victims.
“The service was not to aggrandize the young man at all, but to pay tribute to his life lived thus far,” Strommer says. “To say goodbye to him, hello to the memories that people have of him, and try to begin some closure. To begin the healing process.”
Strommer says the recent violence was not reflective of Padgett’s life.
Police say Padgett stole the AR-15 rifle he used in the shooting from home and took it to school on the bus.
