OUT OF THE PAST: New Farm Labor Office part of war effort

100 YEARS AGO

May 7, 1914

With the primary election only a little more than a week off, the final figures on the countys registration were prepared early in the week. They show the total registration to be 2484, divided into parties as follows: republicans, 1319; democrats, 890; progressives, 105; socialists, 96; prohibitionists, 46; independents, 27; and non partisan, 1.

TROY A.L. Sweet bought the Heckman ranch in the Garden of Eden and brought his family in Monday. Mr. Sweet formerly lived in the Touchet Valley, Wash. A.D. Lang of Lewiston came to Troy in an automobile to look at several ranches on the Grouse flat. Mr. Lang punctured his tire and had to leave his automobile, and he and his wife rode horseback to the flat.

J. Raymond Johnson took his new Metz automobile to Imnaha last week. Through no fault of his own or of the car, he had his troubles getting out of town. Jokesters shut off his gas supply before he got started.

All Around Wallowa County (photo caption) An innovation for a small town was started last fall in Enterprise when a playground was equipped for children of the grade school. Devices of all kinds were installed, for giving children an opportunity for varied and healthy exercise. The playground at once became immensely popular, and has lost none of its hold on the small pupils to this day. When J.A. Churchill, state superintendent of education, was here in the winter, he said this was the best school playground in the state outside of Portland, and it is hardly excelled there.

70 YEARS AGO

May 4, 1944

In order to assist in every possible way with food production for the war effort, a farm labor office has been opened in the jury room in the courthouse under the direction of the state extension service. Charles McCubbin is in charge of the office with the title of energy farm labor. Several placements have already been made by the office, although available labor is very short.

The Chief Joseph Post of the American Legion is sponsoring a dance Saturday at the fairground hall for the purpose of getting a fund started with which it is hoped a new community building can eventually be built in Enterprise after the war.

County Health Nurse Margaret Rogers is now established in her new quarters in the basement of the courthouse. While the outside steps leading to her domain are not yet furnished, her place, a suite of three rooms, is very attractive.

JOSEPH Mr. and Mrs. Verne Russell and baby came on Tuesday of last week from Seattle where he has been employed in the Boeing Aircraft plant. He expects to remain here until he is called into the service, after which Mrs. Russell and baby will make their home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ab Daisley.

50 YEARS AGO

May 7, 1964

Last year almost half a million visitors were checked at Wallowa Lake State Park, which has become one of the most popular state parks in the Pacific Northwest. Containing more than 160 acres, the park maintains five year-around employees and an additional five during the summer season, and operates on an annual budget of approximately $100,000.

Photo caption: The old East Oregon Lumber Company, which flourished in Enterprise from about 1919 to 1929 when it went bankrupt, employed around 500 men and operated a logging railroad over much of the north country.

Six mountain goats were released in the Wallowa Mountains in 1950 by the Oregon State Game Commission and about a dozen of the hardy denizens of the high mountain crags are now making their home around the rims of Matterhorn.

The Enterprise High School band under the direction of Mr. Robert Clegg wowed an audience of over 300 local music lovers into submission last Friday night with the presentation of the finest and most interesting band concert ever given in Wallowa County. … Two special awards given by Mr. Clegg went to Dan Hays, outstanding senior band member; and Terry Emmons of the drum section, the John Phillip Sousa award.

Members of Wallowa Countys timber industry may be making a pitch to local, state and federal officials next week in an effort to change federal forest policies that hold up the logging of fire- or insect-damaged trees. We realize its going to take a political solution, said Mike Wiedeman of Enterprise, who, along with Cassandra Botts of Joseph, is a main organizer of next weeks program, sponsored by Save Our Snake (SOS).

It means a lot to me, said sculptor Austin Barton about winning the Peoples Choice Award for a bronze titled Winds of Autumn, in last weekends Festival of Arts fine arts show in Joseph.

Though the 1989 Lions Club Auction didnt match last years record take, the April 22 event grossed a respectable $4,100 for scholarships from the castoffs of residents garages, attics and shops.

TROY The Troy school children have their new Apple computer and are using it. The students had a treat in April, when Marvella Phelps from the Eagle Cap Ranger District talked about how to enjoy the wilderness area.
