The Enterprise girls basketball team won one and lost two games last week. The three-game week had the Outlaws first losing to Elgin last Tuesday, Jan. 7, in an overtime heartbreaker, 49-51. Next, in a Thursday evening home match up the girls beat Stanfield big, 45-21. On Saturday Enterprise lost to last years 2A state champ runner-up Union, 32-58.
Enterprise vs. Elgin
In this game both teams started out a little slow with a 10-6 score in the first quarter, with Elgin ahead. In the second period the Outlaws outscored the Huskies 14-3, closing the half ahead by 7. Elgin had the best score in the third 18-7. Enterprise didnt quit and McKenna Miller hit a three-pointer in the waning seconds to tie the game up, 42-42. Enterprise had outscored the Huskies 15 to 11 in the last period of regulation. In overtime Carsen Sajonia hit another three to put the Outlaws within two but it wasnt enough.
Hayley Riggs was the player of the game with 20 points, 4 assists and 7 steals. Freshman Tiffanie George was the next leader with 10 points and 6 rebounds. McKenna Miller and Carsen Sajonia each had 7 points. Emma Hall, Sarah Aschenbrenner, and Hannah Schaafsma contributed the rest of Enterprises points.
Elgin went to the free throw line 40 times compared to Enterprises 10; it was the difference in the game, coach Mike Crawford said.
Enterprise vs. Stanfield
After the loss to Elgin the Outlaws came back with a vengeance against the Stanfield team and won this one readily. Coach Crawford gave the Cardinals their due, stating, They are a young team who have been without their lead coach until this game. He added, The girls played a solid game and our full court press paid off.
Enterprise came out strong in this one with the box scores as follows: period one, Enterprise 12-o 2, second 9-7, third 15-10, and 9-2 in the fourth. Enterprise won all the quarters and the game.
Hayley scored the most points again, with 15. Tiffanie George had another good game, scoring 9. For the rest of the team, Carsen bagged 6 points, Sarah Aschenbrenner 5, Hannah 4, Katie Birkmaier 3; and Emma Hall and Emily Ketscher also contributed.
Enterprise vs. Union
Posted on this week OSAAs web page is a quote, Emma Hall is a full tilt player now. Hall gave it her all playing Union; she had 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, shot 40 percent from the free throw line and had one assist.
All this in the rivalry loss to Union at home on Saturday.
About the game the coach said, We came out strong and then instead of rising we faltered. Unions athletic program has been strong over the years and one of their bench players should be a starter.
With this said, Enterprise still outscored Union in the first quarter, 14- 12. It was in the second period when the Bobcats showed up, winning the period 22-2. Union outscored the Outlaws 16-4 in the third. Enterprise outscored Union 12-8 in the fourth.
Union played their starters for almost the entire game, with only one girl coming off the bench, Crawford said.
Hayley was her double-digit self scoring 13, Hannah scored 6, and Emily, Tiffanie, Carsen, McKenna, and Callyn Stewart contributed the rest.
Coach Crawford and the Outlaw girls find themselves in an unusual hole to dig themselves out of. The team on the year is at 2 wins and 4 losses in league play. This weekend the girls will travel to Grant Union on Friday, Dec. 17, and Heppner on Saturday.
Going into the second half of the season, the schedule favors the Outlaws with more home games than away games. We have to win at home to make it to district, Crawford said.
