WHS girls strong against Outlaws for one half

Wallowa Highs Lady Cougars won one game and lost another last week, but it was in the loss that Wallowa made the more positive impression.

At least, thats the view of WHS Coach Greg Oveson, who said his team showed more energy in its 40-31 defeat Saturday, Dec. 14, to the Enterprise Outlaws than it did the previous night in beating Pine Eagle, 32-25. The Pine Eagle game was also played at Enterprise, site of an Outlaws-sponsored weekend tournament.

We made a lot of mistakes against Enterprise, but we played with a lot of enthusiasm, Oveson said.

Wallowa played Enterprise even through one period (14-14) and had a small lead during the second quarter before the Outlaws superior conditioning began to make a difference. We just absolutely ran out of gas, Oveson said. Enterprise went ahead by two points just before the halftime buzzer and built modestly upon that lead the rest of the way.

For the game, Morgan Waters led Wallowa with 14 points, Kristyn Young had six; three players Shai Allen, Taylor Harshield and Jocelyn Tanzey contributed three points apiece, and Macey Frei had two.

Friday night the Cougars won the low-scoring contest with Pine Eagle, which saw Wallowa leading 14-8 at the half and 26-23 after the third quarter before clamping down again on the Spartans offense, which the Cougars held to a meager two-point output in the games final stanza.

There wasnt much energy on either side, Oveson said of the Pine Eagle game. He said Wallowa just did enough things to keep the lead, and (made) a couple plays at the end to put it away.

The coach noted that Wallowa has now played five games. In three of them we havent played with much energy, and hopefully well get that straightened out, he said.

Harshfield led Wallowas offensive attack against Pine Eagle with 11 points. Young and Waters had six points each, Frei scored five, and Lauren Makin four.

Next on the Cougars schedule is the two-day Wallowa Lions Tourney, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20-21. Host WHS goes against Arlington on Friday, and Nixyaawii on Saturday.
