OUT OF THE PAST: Partners shipping 10,000 Christmas trees from here

<p>Some things change and some things stay the same in Wallowa County through the decades. This photo, which is probably at least 50 years old, shows volunteers helping fill boxes with food for residents in need during the community Christmas basket program that continues today. Probably there are a lot of readers who can identify these volunteers; let the Chieftain know.</p>

100 YEARS AGO

Dec. 18, 1913

Wallowa Countys tax levy for state and county purposes has been fixed at 12 mills (Editors note: 1 mill equals $1 in taxes per $1,000 in taxable value). The county court made no special levy for road purposes and the entire revenue will go into the general fund, from which money will be appropriated for road work. The 12 mills levied as the tax rate will produce about $139,000 and after taking out the states share, the county will have $93,000 to run on.

PROMISE Joe Sannar killed a gray wolf one day last week. The Promise people are getting up a program and will have a Christmas tree Dec. 24. All are cordially invited.

Supplies for the new Finley Post Office have arrived at Enterprise, and it is expected letters will be handled shortly at the new office in the home of postmaster Virgil T. Floch. Mail will be carried on the Zumwalt stage, giving twice a week service.

EVANS George Woods, while standing guard over his chicken house Saturday night to see what was killing his chickens, was surprised to find a large bobcat making away with one of his full blood roosters. He soon brought him down with a shotgun.

70 YEARS AGO

Dec. 16, 1943

Other than being a little rough, the ice was fine for skating on the Franklin pond over the weekend and Sunday afternoon saw a large crowd gliding around on its surface. Harold Hammack fell and bruised his hip quite badly, causing him to limp for a few days.

JOSEPH About 10,000 Christmas trees will be shipped to various points by Glen Steel and Frank McCully, who recently became associated in the lumber yard and transfer business. The trees will be trucked to Portland and are bing sent as rapidly as they can be cut and brought into town. This is the first time trees have been shipped from here.

WALLOWA Corda Locke, Wallowa County auctioneer, was hurt painfully at his home on Diamond Prairie Friday when he was dragged by a wild horse. Limping about town yesterday, Mr. Locke ruefully remarked that he wasnt as young as he used to be.

A meeting of the Divide cattle and horse raisers association was held in the office of the forest supervisor last Friday and matters pertaining to the handling of stock on the range were discussed. Old officers of the association were re-elected as follows: M.P. Isley, president; Leo Patten, vice president; and secretary-treasurer and riding boss, Fred Bird.

50 YEARS AGO

Dec. 19, 1963

A decision on the application for licenses to construct high dams on the Snake River at the Mountain Sheep and Nez Perce sites will be forthcoming about Jan. 1, it was announced this week by Joseph C. Swider, chairman of the Federal Power Commission.

Dairying in Wallowa County is still on the decline, it was revealed at the annual meeting of the Wallowa County Creamery Association held Monday night at the South Fork in Lostine. A loss of about 10 percent in sales volume over the previous year was reported. The creamery handled 60,851 pounds of butterfat and products sold amounted to $64,219.

The Jo-Hi Eagles eked out a one-point victory, 70-69, over the Lostine Lions Saturday night in an overtime contest. Gene Hatch and John Smith led the scoring for Joseph with 20 points each. Jim Wynans was high man for the Lions with 17, followed by Butch Winters, Dallas Crow and Terry McArtor, with 14 each.

25 YEARS AGO

Dec. 15, 1988

Wallowa County received more in federal forest receipts in 1988 than it did a year ago, despite a decrease in timber harvest on the Wallowa Valley district. The county will get $1,543,971 $397,000 more than last years payment.

The Joseph City Council voted to apply for two community block grants at a hearing last week a technical assistance request of $7,500 to develop a plan for the upgraded sewer facility and $500,000 to help pay for an expensive sand filtration plant for its water system.

Approximately 50 bags of candy were passed out by St. Nick and youngsters enjoyed games and fire engine rides while their parents went shopping.

Inaugurating a new portable stage at the Enterprise High School gym last Monday, Dec. 5, the Eugene Ballet Company performed The Nutcracker before an appreciative sell-out crowd of 550 county residents.
