In accordance with laws passed by the last session of the Oregon legislature, County Clerk Bilyeu has prepared an estimate of the countys expenses for the year 1914. The budget shows $151,750 to be raised by taxation for the year.
WALLOWA The citizens of Wallowa held a mass meeting at the opera house last Friday night for the purpose of nominating candidates for the annual city election Monday, Dec. 1. The following were nominated for mayor, Edwin Marvin; for recorder, JC Baird; for treasurer, E.A. Searle; for councilman at large for one year, W.G. Trill, and councilman for Ward No. 1 for two years, J.H. Mimnaugh.

All Around Wallowa County (photo caption) The home of Frank S. Johnson, shown herewith, stands on the site where Flora now flourishes. Mr. Johnson began the foundation of his homestead cabin in 1888. In Paradise the homesteaders of that pioneer day were Moses, Lincoln and Clarence Austin, H.A. Thomas; G.M. and H.E. Hendrickson, W.C. Twadell, Ed and Dent Churchill, Mr. Keggy (on the present W.P. Beach ranch), O.P. Barns and Thomas. On Lost Prairie prominent families represented include the Cole, Renfrow, Fordice, Cannon, Lightle, Bacon and Fleet families.

Shortage of logs Saturday necessitated the elimination of the night shift at the Bowman-Hicks Lumber Company mill, affecting about 25 men. As there was a shortage of labor in several departments of the day shift, those laid off the night shift have been absorbed in day work.
JOSEPH The number of residences in Joseph which have been sold within the last two months by their owners cause one to wonder who will next have a for sale sign on their doorway. Many of the residences were purchased by people who are moving to town from other places in the county.
The Gill brothers have sold their ranch at Zumwalt, on which they have lived the past 58 years, to Eugene Chase of Dufur. The ranch consists of 1,760 acres.
Dallas Bennett of Wallowa had a narrow escape from serious injury or death Wednesday when his logging truck overturned and caught fire on the Whiskey Creek road.

Largest taxpayer in Wallowa County this year was the J. Herbert Bates Co. lumber mill at Wallowa, which paid a bill of $67,923.67.
According to the estimates of County Extension Agent Elgin Cornett, the agriculture income this year is up nearly $200,000 over last year. He listed the total for the year at $6,234,591. Of this amount, $4,057,591 is for the cattle industry.
Congressman Al Ullman reports that he has received word from J. Herbert Stone, regional forester for the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S. Forest Service, that local hearings are tentatively planned for early February on a formal proposal for the development of the Minam River Drainage area.
IMNAHA Mr. and Mrs. Greg Tsiatsos and family moved back to La Grande Friday. He has been managing the Y Cross Ranch for the last few months. Taking over the ranch will be Gene Turnbow and Larry Baker.

Its not a mirage, and no the eyes arent playing tricks on anyone. There really is a pronghorn antelope buck roaming the South Fork high country on the edge of the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Its kind of crazy, said Pat Matthews, ODFW assistant biologist. Hes been up there for over two months now. People keep calling to tell us theres an antelope in Lostine canyon.
IMNAHA The walls went up Friday and Monday on the Imnaha Christian Fellowship Church building, 1/8 of a mile from Imnaha on the Joseph highway. A number of community men met each afternoon to raise the walls, put together by a Charlie Contracting Inc. crew and volunteers. This will be the first-ever church in the Imnaha area, though there have been may dedicated Christians living here through the years
Vern Anderson, 84, of upper Prairie Creek, has been named Wallowa County Tree Farmer of the Year. … He makes a picturesque sight, boot deep in snow, trimming and clearing his 280 acres at the end of Tucker Down Road.

Nov. 6 issue The gentleman on the left holding the flag is John Bonner, standing next to a Mr. Nedrow. Charlotte Staub Adams of Klamath Falls, who called in the information, said her mother, Lois Simms Nuss, 98, who made the identification, didnt know who the other two were. John Bonner, Lois Nuss uncle, was a veteran of the Civil War.
Nov. 13 Vesta Jacobs identified this family photo as the Tippett clan, all nine brothers and one sister with parents Sylvanus and Effie Tippett at their town house on Residence Street in Enterprise. Vesta herself, the daughter of Charles Tippett, one of the brothers, is the youngest of three girls sitting grouped down at the lower right side of the photograph. Vestas brother, Fred Tippett, made a more complete identification of almost every person in the photograph. According to Shirley Tippett Guest (who was also in the photo), of Walla Walla, the photo was taken in 1927.
