OUT OF THE PAST: Lostine moves from ‘dry’ to ‘wet’ in saloon vote

100 YEARS AGO

Nov. 6, 1913

With a majority of seven votes in favor of saloon license, Lostine voted on Tuesday to switch from the dry to the wet column. Joseph went more than two to one in favor of retaining saloons, and Wallowa voted almost as strongly against. … The election gave women their first opportunity to vote on saloons, and they seemed to have favored them. … In Joseph 297 voters had registered, 101 of them women, and the vote was 181 for and 89 against.

To insure the immediate completion of the new Carnegie library, the Enterprise city council Monday night passed a resolution agreeing to pay any necessary amount in excess of the $5,000 donated by the Carnegie fund. This amount will not be large, not running over a few hundred dollars. But it is needed to finish and equip the building in all details at once.

J.S. Butner retired yesterday from the position of agent of the rail road at Enterprise, the place being taken by A.L. Rice, formerly of the North Powder station. Mr. Butner has rented Frank Hamblens house and will give all his time, this winter at least, to the dray.

George M. Cannon is calling on old acquaintances in Enterprise, having brought the ballots in from Lost Prairie this morning.

Nov. 4, 1943

Jimmy Strohm, 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Strohm, who live at the junction of OK Gulch and Crow Creek, was critically injured on Wednesday evening of last week when he was accidentally shot with a .22 caliber rifle. … He is still in the hospital but is recovering nicely following an operation.

In taking the school census last week, the school clerk made a very interesting discovery when she enumerated Cheryl and Arthur, the 4-year-old twins of Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Brock. She learned that they were the fifth set of twins on the mothers side of the family (she being a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Zollman of Enterprise) for the past five generations, one set appearing in each generation, beginning with their great-grandmother, who herself was one of twins.

The traditional Armistice day football game between Enterprise and Wallowa will mark the end of the season for both teams. … Three standout Savages will be in their last game: Capt. Tub Warnock, Bud Maxwell and Ray McClain. For their Cougars in their last game will be two of their finest players, Kennison, a big lineman, and Tippett, a back who has accounted for a number of touchdowns this year.

PRAIRIE CREEK Nearly all the men on Prairie Creek have been elk hunting this past week. Among those gone for the week were Adolph Nuxall, Geo. Tomberlin, Harley Tucker, Verne Anderson, Platte Talbott and son Fred. Verne Anderson, who returned Wednesday with a six-point bull, was the only lucky one.

50 YEARS AGO

Nov. 7, 1963

Steve Allen, 9, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Allen of Enterprise, was seriously injured last Thursday when he was run over by a car on River Street north of Jacks Tire Service. … His condition, though still serious, is improved. Steve had been out Halloween night dressed up in some sort of costume and carrying a sack for treats.

The day after Halloween the Joseph Eagles Club of Joseph High School, after obtaining permission from the school administration, took it upon themselves to repair the damage suffered by the business firs and townspeople on Halloween night. … Within an hour and a half they had cleaned the debris from the streets, removed the soap and wax from all the windows and restacked all the overturned wood piles.

EDITORIAL The condition of the local city dumps, and of city dumps in general, is offensive to most citizens who have occasion to go near these foul refuse heaps. … It would not cost a prohibitive amount to cover most dumps and to acquire cheap land where trenches could be dug, refuse deposited only at authorized times, and then covered immediately.

Nov. 3, 1988

Wallowa Countys new Jaws of Life extrication tool proved its worth for the first time last Thursday when it allowed an injured Wallowa couple, Lonnie and Marlene Carol Spencer, both 31, to be removed quickly and safely from their crushed car in a three-vehicle accident at a construction site 4.5 miles west of Enterprise.

Photo caption Five candidates for county office gathered at the Imnaha schoolhouse Sunday for a candidates forum sponsored by the Imnaha Grange. They were county clerk candidates Charlotte McIver and Nate Conrad, county judge candidates Pat Combes and Randy Black, and county commission candidate Don Swart. Les Carlsen, who is also running for commissioner, was unable to attend.

A dynamic duo from Wallowa County Jason Werst of Wallowa and Jennifer Roberts of Joseph once again paced the field in Fridays District 51 boys and girls cross-country meet at McKay Park in Pendleton.

HELP, Inc., has long had the goal of building a community center in Wallowa County to improve services for senior citizens. … An application for funding through the Oregon Community Development Grant Program will be the subject of a public meeting on Nov. 14.
