A hay shortage threatens Wallowa County before spring. The demand now exceeds the supply and prices have gone soaring in a few weeks. The few farmers from the lower valley to the east end of upper Prairie Creek with any hay to spare are now talking about $10 a ton for it.
Mrs. W.F. Craig died Monday night at 10 oclock after an illness of only a week. Acute peritonitis was given as the cause of death. This was induced, the physicians said, by eating raw wheat, which did not digest and led to inflammation of the membrane lining the abdominal cavity.
Among five referendum measures that will be voted on Tuesday, Nov. 4: Sterilization act; its purpose is to authorize, under every safeguard, such surgical operations on habitual criminals and moral degenerates as the state board of health shall deem best.
LEAP Yellow pine wood is one of the products for which Leap is famous. George Downing is delivering 100 ricks to town, Duane Lathrop and L.V. Lathrop have contracted about $600 worth, and many others will furnish small amounts.

Two recent real estate transactions in the county were the sale of the L.C. Huffman ranch on Big Sheep Creek to David Warnock and the sale of the Elmer McFetridge farm on lower Prairie Creek to C. Raymond Johnson.
Summer broke off suddenly into winter throughout many sections of the county when heavy snow fell throughout the mountains and most of the higher foothills. Snow was several inches in the Gumboot country above Lick Creek in the middle of the week and by Saturday had piled up to almost 18 inches on the level. Several hunters were stranded and had to be rescued by the Forest Service.
Effective from the first of October, local dairymen will receive an additional feed subsidy through the War Food Administration of 35c per hundred pounds of whole milk sold or 4c per pound of buttermilk.
BARTLETT Our first snow fell here Oct. 20 but never stayed on. We have had rain and snow most of last week. Reports are that the mountain road via Mt. Misery is closed on account of snowdrifts at Sunset Point.

A robbery involving a large amount of cash, a number of checks and various other personal valuables was committed during the night hours on Monday. Sheriff Mark Marks was called immediately to investigate.
The Joseph Chamber of Commerce, at its regular meeting on Monday evening, discussed briefly the sewers system, which has been proposed by the Joseph City Council. A vote of the members gave full endorsement to the project. In other business, they voted to endorse and support the library that is being planned in Joseph.
Three Wallowa County 4-H club members comprised the champion horse judging team at the Pacific International Livestock show in Portland. IMNAHA Several people have reported seeing cougar and cougar tracks between Pumpkin Creek and Freezeout Saddle viewpoint. One woman reported seeing a cougar reclining on a log near Freezeout viewpoint, but as she only carried a small caliber rifle, she hastily retreated.

Lacy, a 5-year-old bloodhound from Canada has joined the Wallowa County Sheriffs Posse search and rescue team. She got her first taste of the county curing a tracking practice north of Enterprise Saturday.
It was a smash, a hit, said club president Patti Coffee, following last Saturdays 50s-60s bash, sponsored by the Wallowa County Junior Womens Club. More than 500 people jammed Cloverleaf Hall to rock and roll the night away to benefit the Wallowa County EMT Association.
Consolidating Wallowa Countys four districts into a single administrative district would result in a net decrease of state equalization payments, according to a recent study.
