Bronze Bike rally salutes ‘the Ladies’

JOSEPH Ridin for the Ladies, the theme for this weekends 7th Bronze Bike Motorcycle Rendezvous, is a figurative tip-of-the-cap to a growing segment among the annual events attendees: women riders.

Terry De Spain, the rallys promoter/coordinator, says the events official T-shirts have always been black, but this year they will also be available in a color he describes as mild pink. He believes the new color wont be chosen exclusively by women, but also by a number of men as well. One dollar from the sale of each T-shirt will be donated to breast cancer research.

Weve noticed each year we get more and more lady riders, De Spain said. We want to support that. This would be an ideal way to do it something that would be meaningful.

Registration for the Aug. 16-18 rally takes place at the Bronze Bike Headquarters on Main Street. A big banner marks the location.

A free street dance with live music is scheduled Friday, Aug. 16, from 7 to 10 p.m. on Joseph

Street between the Outlaw and Embers Brewhouse restaurants. The annual motorcycle rendezvous launched the Friday evening street dance in 2012, and for 2013 has added a second dance night, Saturday, at the same location. The Aug. 17 dance begins an hour earlier, at 6 p.m.

Vendors and exhibitors set up along Main Street on Saturday morning. That days schedule also includes an American Legion Breakfast on Main Street, the Favorite Bike Contest, a water balloon toss bikers game, a poker walk that anyone can play, a poker run, and a 5 p.m. awards presentation at the Bronze Bike Main Street Stage.

Sundays big event is the Imnaha Rattlesnake Money Run & Brunch.

De Spain said the rally draws its greatest number of participants from Oregon, but also attracts a tremendous amount out of Washington and Idaho.

Because it is geared to what he terms the more upscale motorcycling crowd, De Spain says those participants who spend the night overwhelmingly opt for lodging rather than a tent. We start checking weekly about a month out on the accommodations and where theyre at. By late last week, De Spain was estimating there were only four rooms still available for the rally weekend at the countys major motels and B&Bs.

Closure of the former Best Western near Enterprise has really squeezed the supply of accommodations. Its going to hurt us, no doubt about it, De Spain said. In past years, he said, the rally has booked that hotel solid, its 50-plus rooms lodging around 200 rally-goers.
