OUT OF THE PAST: Dress maker sues city of Enterprise 100 years ago

100 YEARS AGO

July 3, 1913

Suit against the city of Enterprise for $2097.50 has been started by Mrs. Lillian Spicer. She alleges in her complaint that in March she stepped into an opening between the side walk and the cross walk at the southeast corner of the courthouse square and fell, injuring herself severely. There are three items going into make up the total claim: damages, $2,000; services of physician and nurse and medicine, $37.50; and time lost from work (she is a dressmaker), $60.

FLORA A school meeting was held to discuss plans for a new school building. Those proposed plans, if adopted, will greatly improve the school. It is thought that the new building will include a high school.

John McCarty returned the first of the week from Snake River where he went, with Will Litch and George Bascom to put up hay. Afer the hay was down rain set in and work had to be stopped. But the time was not lost entirely, for Mr. McCarty and the boys caught four fine sturgeon in the river, from five to nine and a half feet each.

CHESNIMNUS Chico will celebrate the Fourth on what is known as the old Stickney place. Foot races, horse races and bucking contests. Big dance on platform at night.

70 YEARS AGO

July 1, 1943

The problem of keeping the Enterprise hospital in operation remains unsolved today, although plans were underway to try and get private parties to put up the necessary funds to keep it in operation for the time being. Monday evening representatives of the granges met in the courthouse and made a proposition for running the hospital as a cooperative non-profit organization.

Chuck Oswald, manager of the Lazy T Ranch, states that he is having the best season at the ranch he has had in the eight years that he has operated it. At present there are 21 guests, most of them having come from Chicago, Texas and California, and have made reservations well in advance.

WALLOWA The American Legion and auxiliary and families gave a potluck dinner Sunday in honor of the recent selectees from this vicinity, Fred Carper, Wesley Wortman, Raymond Southwick and Kenneth Barklow. Jimmie Litchfield, who is home on furlough from Farragut, Idaho, and Rex Southwick of the army, also on furlough, were special guests.

50 YEARS AGO

July 4, 1963

Duke Craig Fox, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Fox, and Duchess Wendy Rathbun, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rathbun, will reign over the 8th annual Junior Rodeo, which will be held at the fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The rodeo, sponsored by the Jaycees, will get under way with a parade Saturday at noon through downtown Enterprise.

The Oregon Historical Societys annual trek, called the Trappers Rendezvous, rolled into Enterprise in three large chartered busses and numerous private cars Friday evening, June 28. The group numbered over 160. Snow fell on the group during their lunch stop at Hat Point on Saturday, but the guests were most gracious in their comments on the weather in Wallowa County.

Young people of Wallowa County are registering to attend the Wallowa County Educational Day Camp, which begins July 22. This unique educational summer program offers opportunity for inquiry into many fields, stimulating the minds and imaginations of young people grades four through 12.

The Enterprise swimming team posted a narrow 77-74 victory in a thrilling meet held last Sunday. Enterprise picked up eight first places and broke one meet record. Tina Olson shattered the old breast stroke record in the girl 11-12 class by more than six seconds with a time of 52.3.

25 YEARS AGO

June 30, 1988

The potential migration of hazardous wastes to the Wallowa River and springs that supply drinking water to the city of Enterprise has landed the Joseph Forest Products mill site on the EPAs list for proposed Superfund cleanup projects.

Fans of cowboy entertainment will be in for a treat of poetry and song at the Lostine Flea Market this weekend. Local cowboy poet and singer/songwriter Fred Bornstedt and Sonny Hancock of Lakeview have teamed up with five other poets and the Possum Trotters to present three shows at the South Fork Grange Hall.

More than 250 friends and relatives helped John and Alta Stein celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary May 29 at the Catholic Parish hall in Enterprise. They were married May 26, 1918, in Enterprise by William B. Hawkins, pastor of the Church of God.

Wallowa Countys Mike McFetridge, 80, is one of 10 finalists for the Oldest Cowboy in the West honor being awarded during a Fourth of July celebration in Haines this weekend. He said he cant even remember learning to ride; he just grew up on a horse.
