City raises sewer rates 3.5 percent

ENTERPRISE Sewer customers will see a 3.5-percent rate increase, effective July 1, following the Enterprise City Councils approval of the hike at the city governments monthly regular meeting Monday evening, June 10.

The percentage translates to $1.98 more per month, totaling $23.76 yearly, for the vast majority of residential customers, whose usage is at the level of one equivalent dwelling unit (EDU).

Councilors and Mayor Margie Shaw passed the proposal by a 5-1 vote, with councilor Bill Coffin voting against it. Councilor Tim Parks was absent.

In discussion preceding the vote, Coffin argued for cutting the city budget to eliminate need for the rate hike, which is projected to make up roughly half of an approximately $65,000 loss in annual revenue the city sustained in providing rate relief last year to lodging businesses. Previously, lodging establishments were charged for sewer service to all rooms, regardless of occupancy.

I think Im speaking for my constituents, Coffin said, and proceeded to warn the board that citizens are not going to tolerate any kind of increase whatsoever… I think youre going against the best interests of the city of Enterprise.

Other board members sounded mildly exasperated in response, councilor Larry Christman recalling that Coffin hadnt attended the citys May 22 budget hearing. Coffin did not propose any specific cuts Monday night, and the city budget is scheduled for adoption June 19.
