100 YEARS AGO
June 5, 1913
The Chesnimnus roundup no show affair but the real thing probably will begin about June 20. Cattlemen are awaiting word from Thomas Marks, boss of the range. When he fixes the date, riders will gather in the hilly district in the east part of the county and bring the cattle together for the first sorting of the season.
Rivers and creeks which have been out of their banks for a week or more are falling gradually. The weather has remained warm, continuing to melt the snow in the mountains, but there has been no rain.
LOSTINE The bridge at Sam Wades has been declared impassible by road supervisor Irvin Whitmore. The river bottom from the railroad track to the bridge was under water, but evidently A.M. Smith and Dr. Gregory of Wallowa did not know this. The car was driven into a hole and could not be moved one way or another.
Memorial Day was observed in Enterprise in fitting manner, with simple exercises in harmony with the spirit of the day. A long procession marched to the cemetery in the morning and decorated the graves of the soldiers.

Sheepmen of Wallowa County met with the county court this week in an effort to try and find some means whereby the coyote menace, which is said to be the worst it has ever been in the history of the county, can be controlled. Fred Falconer Sr., speaking for the sheepmen said during the past 30 days he has lost about 335 lambs, mostly killed by coyotes.
Lorenzo Bacon, a resident of this county for nearly 60 years, passed away at his home in Enterprise early Sunday morning, May 30, after several months of illness due to old age. (He was 84).
JOSEPH When Henry Hall of Joseph joined the armed forces of Uncle Sam in the last call, it made a full half dozen sons of Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Hall of Joseph to belong to different branches of the service. Mr. Hall also works in the shipyards. There are three other sons too young to go, Bill, Joe and James.
LOSTINE The recent rains have improved the extreme arid conditions of growing crops and the farmers who irrigate have ample water in all ditches, as both rivers have been swelling their banks. The Lostine River has carried several logs downstream and one caused concern to the city dam. The damage was soon discovered by Watermaster Hovis, who, with help, saved the structure from undermining.

A group of about 25 youngsters met at the fairgrounds in Enterprise to compete for the title of Duke and Duchess of the Wallowa County Junior Rodeo, sponsored by the Wallowa County Jaycees. Winners were Craig Fox of Enterprise and Wendy Rathbun of Joseph.
One of the largest Wallowa County Fairs on record was concluded at the fairgrounds in Enterprise. One of the highlights was the wool show, in which over 120 fleeces were exhibited in the 4-H, FFA and open class divisions, with the top award for fleece going to Dexter Yokom Jr. of Enterprise.
Forty-six golfers held their mixed ball tournament Sunday, June 2, in a downpour at the local course. John Rahn and Pearl Justice with a net score of 66 won the tournament. Dean Erwin and Barbara Gates won the low gross, and Ray Milligan won the long drive, with Grace Thompson winning for the ladies.

The mood was upbeat, positive and personal. Gov. Neil Goldschmidt, who was making a three-day swing through northeastern Oregon to gather input for his Childrens Agenda, liked what he heard in Wallowa Thursday from five residents who oversee programs for children in Wallowa County.
Thirty-one 1988 graduates in Wallowa County earned almost $77,000 in scholarships and awards, many of them announced at commencement exercises at the countys three high schools last week. The total was boosted by a $20,000 three-year ROTC scholarship collected by Chris Cunningham of Enterprise High School.
Dancing, socializing and a chance to win a 1978 LTD II with the $3 cost of admission are expected to prove irresistible draws when the long-awaited Fridays youth entertainment program debuts.
Despite cruel, cold windy weather conditions, the Rotary-sponsored Wallowa Valley Run-off drew 70 runners of all ages from some of the far regions of Washington and Oregon Monday. Participants competed in either a half-marathon from Wallowa Lake, a 7-mile run from Joseph or a 2.6-mile loop south of town, with all three finishing at Enterprise City Park.
