Golfers should learn to love the water

Alpine Meadows seems ever-changing.
Its incredibly great that we will soon have a body of water to add to the aesthetics of the golf course, but with that pretty-to-look-at addition come challenging water hazards. Trout Creek is one thing, but suddenly you have the unusual over-the-pond tee shot on No. 4, water to the left of No. 6 green, and water parallel to the left side of the No. 7 fairway.
These water hazards are already showing mental effects.
In a pond and landscaping report to the ladies group, Gregg Sturtevant, course superintendent, asked the women to begin thinking of a name for the pond. Whispered comments among gals, who had just played No. 4, suggested theyd already named it.
Hang in there, says Sturtevant with a look that says you cant just sprinkle fairy dust and wave a magic wand! When finished, he continued, the No. 4 tee box forward, middle and back tees will be level with the pond bank. The par-three hole is still birdie-able. Youre going to love it.
Ladies Day, May 28, weather woes kept women from the course. Usually on a drizzly Tuesday the women gather for coffee in the clubhouse hoping the weather breaks, says Shane Homan, manager, but it was cold all day.
Game winners for a sunnier May 21 were: low gross, Carol Marr, 95; Cheri Lamb, 101. Low net, Ernestine Kilgore, 77; Judy Ables, 78.
Mens Day on Thursday, May 23 winners in the Blind Partners game: first, Buck Beier/ Terry Lamb; second, Jim Kilgore/Jerry Cornett. Skins, gross/net, Jim Kilgore, 3 skins, Neil Warnock, 2 skins; Terry Lamb/ Neil Warnock 1 skin each.
Thirty-six golfers participated in the Triple-Six Tournament on Saturday, June 1. Lance Homan/John Decker had low gross for field with a 65. See all results next week.
Mens league official sign-up day is Wednesday, June 5. Cost is $20 to join, and $5 a week to play.
What doesnt change at Alpine Meadows is our policy to encourage youth to learn golf. For those, 10 and under, free balls are offered for practice on driving range, and free golf when attended by an adult.
AMGC encourages adults to practice, but no freebies.
