OUT OF THE PAST: Widow killed by strike of lightning in Paradise

100 YEARS AGO

May 29, 1913

Mrs. Alice Thomas, widow of H.H. Thomas and member of one of the leading families of the county, was struck by lightning and killed Monday afternoon while gathering in clothes off the line at her home in Paradise.

Wallowa County has had more than its usual measure of weather in the last week. Sunday was hot and Monday up until late in the afternoon was still warmer. Then suddenly a disastrous windstorm swept the county, accompanied by lightning. The storm was particularly violent in the Sled Springs neighborhood in the north woods. Hail fell to a depth of four inches around the John Cox ranch, about 10 miles north of Wallowa.

A defective flue fire caused extensive damage to the upper part of the house occupied by W.H. Durham last Friday shortly before noon. Hose trucks were rushed to the place on Residence Street, drawn by automobiles, and the greater part of the house was saved.

L.C. Johnson came to Enterprise from his Imnaha home last week. He does not plan on taking his new automobile, as the Imnaha road is a road not to be trifled with even at its best.

70 YEARS AGO

May 27, 1943

Wallowa Countys 29th contingent of selectees (27 men) left Enterprise Wednesday evening by bus for the Spokane army induction station, under the leadership of George Robert DeLap and assistant leadership of Calvin Gordon Harper and Leo Wade.

WALLOWA Due to the manpower shortage, the Moore mill will not operate this year. Bowman-Hicks has taken over the logging facility. The position of mayor left vacant by the move of Mr. Merle Becket will be filled by acting mayor M.C. Oveson.

PROMISE The month of May has been bad, rain and snow and freezing at nights. The Bowman-Hicks company has moved their logging outfit to the A.E. Carper place and has been sending as high as 22 loads of logs per day to Wallowa.

POWWATKA Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Ord Wortman that their son, Lowell, has arrived safely overseas. Sunday was the first really nice day we have had for a long time. Monday the thermometer went up to 78 in the shade.

50 YEARS AGO

May 30, 1963

A hazel-eyed brunette from Imnaha has seen a dream of eight years finally come true. Orla Mae Teel was crowned queen of the 1963 Chief Joseph Days at last Saturday nights queen dance. Other members of the rodeo court are Pam Preece of Enterprise and Treva Cowan of Wallowa.

An unusual thunderstorm hit Enterprise during the late afternoon last Thursday, causing some minor damage and flooding in some areas of town. According to some of the old-timers of the area, this was the hardest rain ever experienced in this area, even for a short time.

FLORA Graduation exercises were held last Thursday evening for two eighth grade students, Michael Curry and Ricci Weatherman, with a very good attendance. Rev. Lowell Wood was the speaker and Mrs. Wood played the accordion.

The following Pratt School history (printed as the schools last year comes to an end) was prepared last year by two students, Michael McFetridge and Michael Foster. They interviewed several old-timers. The Creighton School, built about 1882, was moved down to the present location about 1900.

May 26, 1988

Wallowa County athletes garnered four gold medals at the state Class A track and field championships held at Springfield High School last weekend. WHSs super fine fieldsman duo of Craig Horton and Shawn Creswell both brought home champion metals, as did Jo-His spear specialist Michelle Musia and the Enterprise 400 relay team (Randy Collins, Randy Conrad, J.D. Connall and Clint Stein).

Joseph freshman Leigh Latta received the Student of the Year award from principal Bill McCadden in Monday evenings academic achievement program.

VFW Auxiliary announced $200 scholarship winners at its May 16 meeting. They were Coby Menton of Joseph, Kristin Olsen of Enterprise and Marlene Pitman of Wallowa.
