On Friday, March 8, Ed Scott who lives midway between Wallowa and Lostine was cited for animal neglect-1 as 41 head of cows and calves under his ownership were confiscated by the Wallowa County Sheriffs Office.

The cows had been located on property belonging to Bob Bennett, located about one mile south of Scotts home.

Sheriff Steve Rogers said several horses visible from Highway 82 adjacent to Scotts residence have been moved as well, but Rogers wouldnt say who possessed the horses or whether any citations were pending in connection with those animals. The investigation continues.

Six members of the sheriffs office worked to move the cattle Friday, said Rogers, and the cows and calves are currently being fed, watered, and supplied with minerals.

Rogers said vagueness in Oregons animal neglect law makes it difficult to enforce. He says animal neglect charges are based on minimal feed, minimal water, and minimal shelter criteria that are not defined clearly.

Admitting that the 41 cows and calves now are under the ownership of the Wallowa County Sheriffs Office, Rogers asks that he be contacted at 541-426-3131 by anyone wishing to donate hay to support the cattle.
