OUT OF THE PAST: County health officer implements quarantine to quell smallpox

100 YEARS AGO

Jan. 30, 1913

Smallpox has appeared in two districts of the county and steps are taken to prevent its spread. Four cases have developed on Upper Prairie Creek and Sheep Creek. Dr. C.T. Hockett, county health officer drove out to the district and placed a general quarantine in place. A number of smallpox cases are also reported from the Wallowa district, but the fight on it have been conducted very quietly.

The wrestling match between James Hopkins of Enterprise and Ed Warner of La Grande in the Enterprise opera house Wednesday was a draw, with each having one fall.

IMNAHA We are having beautiful weather at present, and the little girls were out picking buttercups. It may have been one below zero at Freezeout, but it has never been below zero at the bridge and below, and has only been to zero here once. J.S. Pratt of Enterprise has been on the river the past few days on business. He says, It seems nice to get my feet on bare ground again.

FLORA Most of the men of this and surrounding communities are taking advantage of the fair weather in getting their woodpiles replenished. The recent stormy period made very evident the fact that there are things more to be desired than getting out in the storm and sawing, splitting and hauling wood. Now all are making wood while the sun shines.

70 YEARS AGO

Jan. 28, 1943

Plans for the celebration of the presidents birthday for the benefit of the National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis in Wallowa County are complete, according to C.H. Reavis, county chairman. The Presidents Ball will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall Saturday night in Enterprise.

PRAIRIE CREEK We are having a real old-fashioned winter on Prairie Creek. There was about a foot of snow. Then a high wind came up last Tuesday and drifted all the roads full and there was no mail until Saturday. The county bulldozer came up and opened up part of the road and finished it Sunday.

PROMISE Our telephone line that was torn to pieces by last weeks storm is in working order again. The wind was so hard that a dozen trees were blown on the line. The snow is over three feet deep and the coldest night was 20 below zero.

The High School guild enjoyed a bob-sled ride Tuesday evening, the team and sled being furnished and driven by Wayne Cook. Their destination was the Oscar Shafer farm on Alder Slope, where their young hostess, Miss Esther, served hot chocolate, sandwiches and cookies. Nineteen young people made up the load.

50 YEARS AGO

Jan. 31, 1963

Modernization of the Lostine street lighting facilities resulted in a new look for the area since 16 new 7000 lumen power street lights were turned on. The new lights produce almost two times as much illumination as the 19 old fixtures.

Rev. James E. Jones arrived in Enterprise this week from Eugene to assume the duties of the Enterprise Community Church.

After several years of growing peas in Wallowa County, the Lamb-Weston company has decided to discontinue their operations this year. The past few years about 1400 acres of peas have been contracted in this area by the company.

TROY Harlan Scott of the Troy Game Management is doing pretty well with his elk trapping this year. So far he and Ron Matheny have tagged nine elk.

25 YEARS AGO

Jan. 28, 1988

The Wallowa Lake Lodge is getting ready for a new lease on life. While some folks will look back with nostalgia when bat sighting counts were kept on the third floor walls and signs warned guests that use of a hair dryer would blow a fuse, there is no doubt that the renovation getting underway at the 65-year-old lodge is long overdue.

The fate of a new state highway maintenance station at a scenic site just west of Enterprise was left unresolved at a public hearing by the Wallowa County Planning Commission. At the end of the appeal hearing, the commission voted unanimously to remand it back to planning director Kurt Dreyer.

Wallowa Countys November unemployment rate of 5.6 percent was substantially below the 7.7 percent of the same month the previous year.
