Wallowa County Grain Growers entry No. 2, the one with Santa Claus waving atop a well-lighted piece of farm machinery, captured the Winterfest Light Parade trophy as the favorite entry Saturday evening.
In all there were two dozen winter-time entrants for the parade to delight enthusiastic spectators on both sides of Main Street for the annual parade, which even featured a Winterfest snowfall. Most of the entries then lined up in the middle of the street afterwards for post-parade festivities. The trophy winner was selected by a vote of the people.
After the parade an auction of 15 pans of fudge entered in the first Winterfest Fudge Contest grossed a total of $510 to be used for city of Enterprise Christmas decorations. The first-place entry, Yum Yum Lemon Fudge, by Vivian Tillman of Joseph, brought a winning bid of $100, while runner-up JBs Favorite Coffee Fudge by Carla Fisher of Enterprise and third place Rocky Road Fudge by Tamara Duncan (made in memory of Dan Duncan), each sold for $40 bids.
Winning the big stockings given away by Enterprise to winners under age 12 were Bailey Vernam of Enterprise and Kohlten Mardis, visiting his grandmother Helen Ellis in Enterprise from out of town; winners of video and pizza prizes given away by the Enterprise Police Department were Marley Hayes and Adam Rodrigues.
Everyone seemed in a festive mood during the two-day Winterfest celebration, according to the Enterprise Merchants committee that organized the event.
It was a huge success, from the Christmas Gift Market to the parade, said Sondra Lozier. Santa was a huge success, too.
She said that the barrel train, driven by Jim Rynearson, which took kids for rides both Friday and Saturday afternoon, made so many trips it traveled 47.5 miles up and down Main Street.
Among other activities adding to the Winterfest spirit were wagon rides, candlelight caroling, a chili feed hosted by the fire department and a story time at the library.
Lozier said that the Winterfest committee already has ideas for next years celebration.
