100 YEARS AGO

Nov. 21, 1912

The recent general election (in which the county as a whole voted against permitting the sale of intoxicating liquor) may result in reopening the entire Joseph saloon license controversy. Those who oppose saloons say the election supersedes that of last November when Joseph voted for saloons.

Train service has been badly demoralized on the Wallowa County branch for the week past. For three days in succession the line in the canyon was blocked by a train off the track.

Albert Morgan, who is at the county seat as a member of the jury venir, is convinced that the automobile will prove the salvation of residents on the Imnaha and elsewhere away from the railroad. He is thinking strongly of getting a machine next year. If the roads are kept up, it will put his Imnaha ranch only a few hours from the county seat.

The septic tank and cesspool at the courthouse were uncovered last week and pumped out. The cesspool fills up frequently apparently because the ground is already saturated with water. The county court is considering digging a private sewer from the septic tank to the river, as it seems the present plan of disposing of the wastewater will never be satisfactory.

70 YEARS AGO

Nov. 19, 1942

H.J. Rayner, Chief Aquatic Biologist for the Oregon State Game Commission, recently completed a study of fish in Wallowa Lake and has submitted his report to the Game Commission. His report indicates that the yanks (landlocked sockeye salmon) in the lake should be studied to determine whether they are becoming stunted as the results of genetic factors or low water temperature.

The Enterprise Savages boxing and wrestling team battled its way to another victory by trimming the Joseph Eagles in the Enterprise FFA Smoker in the EHS gymnasium Nov. 13. Three hundred and forty-five people watched the contestants in 11 bouts.

Nov. 22, 1962

The committee working with the annual Wallowa County Christmas basket program will meet in the courthouse Nov. 27 to formulate plans. For several years the program has enlisted the efforts of a large number of people and resulted in the filling and distribution of around 70 baskets for needy families.

IMNAHA Mrs. Barbara Warnock was lucky in getting her elk Sunday up Saddle Creek. Mike Marks, Grant Warnock and Bob Warnock were all hunting that day, but Barbara was the lucky one. Mrs. Geanne Marks went with them to drive the car back while the others hunted down the canyon.

Nov. 19, 1987

A latecomer got in a hurry for Pete and Sandy Beaudoin of Enterprise early Monday morning while they were en route to the hospital in La Grande. The latecomer, 8-pound 10-ounce Anna Lee, was delivered by Pete in the parking lot of C & M Gas and Groceries in Elgin about 2:20 a.m.

Gerald Magera of Enterprise, a U.S. Forest Service forester who manages a family tree farm for relaxation, has been recognized as Wallowa Countys tree farmer of the year.

Irene Barklow will be signing copies of her new book, From Trails to Rails, at a reception in her honor Saturday at the Bookloft in Enterprise.
