Shrine golf tourney benefits hospital

Fifty-eight golfers, both Shriners and non-Shriners, participated in the 2012 Shrine Golf Tournament held Friday, July 27, at Alpine Meadows Golf Course in Enterprise.

The golf tournament held the Friday of Chief Joseph Days and the Shriners Chief Joseph Days breakfast held the following morning both are sponsored by the Wallowa County Shriners Club.

All proceeds from those two events, the largest money making events of the year for the local Shrine Club, is donated to the Shriners Childrens Hospital, in Portland.

Both men and women golfers competed separately in the tournament.

For the women, Julie Hickerson recorded the lowest gross score ahead of second place finisher Linda Whittemore. Mary Lou McCormick earned top honors for net score with Kathie Moore placing second.

There were enough male golfers in the field to divide competitors into three flights.

In the first flight of the mens competition, Carlo Chimburas earned low gross honors followed by Dan Cornett.

The low net winner in the first flight was David Daggett with Rick McCormick placing second.

Claiming low gross honors in the second flight was Easton Powaukee. Ashley Prince placed second. The low net winner in that second flight was John Tomkinson, followed by second place winner Guy Hadden.

Taking low gross honors in the third flight was Austin Stein, claiming that title ahead of Mike Jones. Paul Wooden and Levi Taylor claimed first and second place respectively for net scores in that third flight.

One additional event played in the tournament was Diddle Ball. Winning that event was the team of David Daggett, Ashley Prince, Stoney Bunnell, and Greg Meltebeke. Placing second in Diddle Ball were James Yost, Jim Hite, Dave Johnson, and Guy Hadden.
