Lady Cougars halt Heppner

HEPPNER – Wallowa’s Lady Cougars took down the host Lady Mustangs Friday, 48-41, at a weekend tournament that also included a loss for the Cougars, 31-63, on Saturday versus Ione.
Against Heppner, the Cougars went up by two points in the first period, then opened up a nine-point lead with a 14-7 second quarter performance. In the second half, their opponents could manage to trim only two points off that margin.
Sisters Skylar Waters and Morgan Waters were Wallowa’s offensive stars against Heppner, scoring 16 and 14 points, respectively, with respective field goal percentages of 42 and 50 percent. Teammate Bekah Jamerson was also in double figures with 12 points. Sara Chrisman, Breanna Wallace and Baylee Shelton added two points each.
The Lady Cougars were somewhat overmatched Saturday against Ione’s Lady Cardinals, who performed most of their damage in the first quarter, a 17-2 runaway for Ione.
In the contest, no one reached double figures in scoring for Wallowa, and the Cougars’ collective field goal percentage was a paltry 18 percent. WHS players on the board were Jamerson, eight points, Morgan Waters, six, Taylor Harshfield, six, Skylar Waters, five, Wallace, two, Kristyn Young, two, and Sally Mary Blair, two.
The Lady Cougars, who now sport a 3-2 overall record (no league games as yet), play in the Joseph Invitational Tourney Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16-17.
