When the oldest inhabitant says he never saw the like before, then last week’s snow storm is entitled to be something of a record breaker. The snow began to fall Thursday night, sifting down lightly. But it stuck to the job without a let-up until Sunday evening, when the white blanket was about 20
inches deep at Enterpris and still heavier in the forests and other parts of the county.
A town of 40 houses with a population of more than 100 people has just moved five miles in Wallowa County. … The town is the Swamp Creek camp of East Oregon Lumber company, which has found a new site five miles down the canyon and some 25 miles from town.
B.A. Butterfield, for years well known grower of purebred sheep, arrived last week to take the position of manager of the Davin-Michellod Sheep & Land company. He came from Weiser, Idaho, where he formerly had a ranch. His office is in connection with the offices of the Wallowa Milling & Grain Company at Enterprise.

Elmer Storm, who was seriously injured last week when he was accidentally shot in the chest with a 410 gauge shotgun while hunting, is still in the hospital but is improving very satisfactorily. … Dr. Scharff has been attending Elmer.
Otis Bailey drove up to Jay Templeton’s service station Monday. His beautiful black two-horse engine was functioning beautifully. Jay came bustling out and filled the pneumatic tires with air, but there was no gasoline sale as the two-horse power was provided by a team of fine black horses and the tires were on a wagon with a hay rack for hauling hay.
Thanksgiving was an especially happy day for Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Hays when they entertained all their children and families for the first time in eight years. Ted Hays and wife and baby came from Baker and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Hays and two children, with Dr. and Mrs. Rollin Baker and Mr. and Mrs. Hays formed the dinner party.
JOSEPH – Russell Blevans has leased the Eben store building and will open with a brand new grocery stock the last of this week. … Mr. Eben first came to Joseph in 1905 and has been in business longer than any other man in Joseph.

A Wallowa County jury will be asked for a second time to determine how much damages an elk hunter suffers when some other hunter tags a bull he has shot. … Thomas Beck, the unhappy hunter, has not given up and his suit will come up for a second time Dec. 7. Beck places his damages at $8,000.
Ford Peterson has purchased an industrial site, consisting of approximately 8 acres, including the mill and mill pond on the west side of Enterprise. Mr. Peterson will move his iron and steel salvage business to this site in the near future.
A meeting to launch plans for the annual distribution of baskets to needy families at Christmas time will be held Nov. 29. … John Olson is chairman of the committee for the Elks lodge and invites representatives from all church groups and other organizations.
Photo caption – The ruins of the old Midway hotel about 17 miles northeast of Enterprise on the Zumwalt Road may still be seen. … The old road to Imnaha followed the present Zumwalt Road to Midway, and then cut out east between the Buttes to Camp Creek and came out a short distance above the Bridge.

Millions of board feet burned in one of the worst fire seasons on record are being airlifted out of rugged Joseph Canyon, marking the start of a massive timber salvaging project. Columbia Helicopters of Portland has begun harvesting timber on one of two salvage sales that will be logged exclusively with helicopters.
The Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce honored four individuals at its annual banquet Monday. They were: Wallowa High School/ESD superintendent Dave Smyth, the educator of the year; Erna Ratcliff of Enterprise, outstanding civic leader; and KWVR radio/Eagle Mountain art galleries owners Lee and Carol Lee Perkins, outstanding business leaders.
The holiday shopping season is an excellent time to get acquainted with the new Forget-Me-Not Flower and Gift Shop, opened by Henry and Judy Kinsley in the living room of their Joseph home.
