OUT OF THE PAST: Large crew busy on hatchery

90 YEARS AGO

Oct. 27, 1921

Dirt is flying with a vengeance on the new salmon hatchery ponds a mile west of Enterprise. On Tuesday 22 men were working and 44 horses were employed… The contractor, Warren Construction Company, follows its usual policy of employing local men, and the horses all belong here. The men drive to the grounds in the morning in wagons on which they take feed for their horses at noon, and return to their homes at night.

W.C. Sivyer, president of the Enterprise Electric company arrived from Spokane last Friday and departed on Wednesday, after inspecting the progress of the new power plant above the lake… More than 1,000 feet of the high pressure water pipe has been laid on the mountainside at the plant, under the supervision of R.L. Forsythe, and this part of the work is being rushed… Mr. Forsythe hopes to beat winter.

The first train of logs to arrive in town from East Oregon camp on Swamp Creek since summer pulled in on Tuesday, signaling the resumption of work in the woods and foreshadowing a winter of activity at the mill.

FLORA – Chester Buzzard has been suffering with very sore eyes, caused by the Sonora dust from the wheat threshing.

70 YEARS AGO

Oct. 30, 1941

The Murrey Sawmill established in Enterprise a little over a year and a half ago has already developed into a business of considerable magnitude and importance to the community. So far this year the mill has turned out approximately two million feet of lumber and, according to Mr. Harley A. Murrey, another million feet will probably be run off before the first of the year… Enough saw dust has been accumulated to supply the present saw dust burners in operation in Enterprise for about two years, according to Mr. Murrey and Mr. Stearns.

Don Fleming and Johnny Rahn have reached Johnson Island, far out in the Pacific Ocean, nearly 600 miles from Hawaii and are now working there… The boys find the island very small. Don says he can walk entirely around it in a half hour.

JOSEPH – Mrs. Kirk Beith has the chairmanship of the local drive committee for the Red Cross. The Woman’s Club has sponsored the Red Cross work and the membership drive begins Nov. 1 and ends Dec. 1.

According to an announcement made public in Washington, a limited number of additional men between the ages of 17 and 50 will be given a chance to enlist in the Navy or Naval Reserve.

50 YEARS AGO

Oct. 26, 1961

Photo Caption- This proud aggregation of boys from the Joseph High School FFA chapter and their advisor, J. Dennis Roach, made an outstanding record at the Pacific International Livestock Show in the livestock judging field. Competing against 74 FFA judging teams from all sections of the Pacific Northwest, they were rated second in total points, missing first place by only 17 points out of a possible 1,800.

The Enterprise high school was broken into over the weekend by robbers who peeled the safe in the office of Supt. Jim Courtney and took approximately $440 in currency. The local police have taken fingerprints and are making a thorough investigation.

Historical interest was added to the October meeting of the Wallowa County Historical Society, which met recently in the social lounge of the Masonic hall, when the 37 members and guests heard the pioneer story of the Reavis family as given by David B. Reavis and wife, India.

25 YEARS AGO

October 30, 1986

Abigail Delfause, the new Business Reference Librarian at the Oregon State Library, and Patricia Cutright from the Eastern Oregon State Library will be at Joseph City Library. They will be demonstrating the use of the Joseph City Library Apple MacIntosh 512K computer for information retrieval and other business applications.

In a continuing effort to make Wallowa County areas a better, safer place to live, the Wallowa County Sheriff’s Dept. has purchased a new audio-visual film. This award-winning film was developed for the department in its fight against drug abuse.

LA GRANDE – A forestry workshop designed to help a variety of youth leaders improve their knowledge and techniques in forestry education, will be held at Eastern Oregon State College in La Grande, Nov. 21-22.
