Sweep knocks Eagles out of first

JOSEPH Senior Ian Baynes hit two doubles and scored twice for the high schools baseball team, but the Eagles lost both ends of an April 29 doubleheader at home against Elgin by scores of 16-0 and 13-10.
Elgin knocked Joseph out of the four-way tie, also including Wallowa-Imbler and Union, for first place in Special District 7. The Eagles record in the league evened at 3-3, matching the Wallowa-Imbler Cats in third place. Josephs overall mark fell to 7-7.

Joseph also played May 3 at Wallowa in games that had no impact on the league standings. That was too late for this edition of the Chieftain.
Enterprise senior J.R. Masters pitched all seven innings of the second game against Elgin, including seven strikeouts. Senior Trent Martin started the first game on the mound, and lasted into the fourth inning, with four strikeouts. Sophomore Jordan Wulff-Castilleja relieved Martin, and worked until senior Forrest Watson took over in the sixth inning. Watson threw a strikeout.
Baynes managed to hit a double in the first game, but the Eagles finally put together some offense in the second game. Sophomore Cody Duquette, Wulff-Castilleja and Baynes each scored twice. Junior Trevor McWaters, sophomore Jacob Curtis, Watson and Martin each chipped in a run. Baynes hit another double, while McWaters and Martin also connected on extra-base hits.
