ENTERPRISE Runner Marcus Lynn and thrower Erich Roepke, juniors on the high schools track-and-field team, both finished the month of April with personal records and victories at the Pepsi Invitational in Union. Those were two of several strong performances by Enterprise athletes over a weekend that also included the Jo-Hi Invitational.
Lynn won the boys 200-meter race at Union on April 30, crossing the finish line just a hair ahead of Danny Angel. The Stanfield sprinter had edged Lynn in the 100, but Lynn completed the 200 in 23.02 seconds, his fastest run ever.
Freshman David Ribich finished the 3,000-meter race in second place.
Roepke threw the javelin 178 feet and 11 inches, farther than anybody else at the meet and farther than any of his previous attempts. His teammate, Wallowa freshman Aaron Wallace, also made his best javelin throw this season.
Junior Stephen Quarreys discus throw was good enough for second place, about three feet beyond the third-best, Roepke. Quarrey also established a new personal record in shot put.
Meanwhile, the girls set several records on the track. Junior Jeska Birkmaier ran her best 100-meter hurdles of the season. Freshman Hope Shaw did likewise in the 300-meter hurdles. In the 200-meter race, sophomores Elsa Steen and Zoe Mathias both finished in their fastest times. The girls 400-meter relay set another season-high.
On the field, Steen took second place in the girls high jump, while sophomore Jennifer Wood was second in shot put. A pair of long jumpers, freshmen Myranda McFetridge and Katie Birkmaier, made their best attempts.
The previous day at Joseph, the Enterprise team won seven events. Ribich accounted for two of those, finishing both the 1,500-meter race and the 3,000 in first place. Sophomore Dustin Dean won the high jump with his personal record, sophomore Jordan Widener wound up first in the long jump, and senior Kyle Stangel took the 400. The 400-meter relay team scored another victory.
The boys accumulated points in other events. Widener took second place in the 100-meter dash, while Lynn was third. Roepke was second in javelin and discus. Quarrey was third in shot put and discus. The 4×400-meter relay finished second. Senior Tyler Micka ended up third in the 800, and Deah was third in triple jump.
Some boys in the field had their best performances of the season. Junior Duncan Christman made his longest throws in shot put and discus. Senior Randall Rystrom made his longest triple jump.
Meanwhile, senior Alex McCadden won the girls 100-meter hurdles at Joseph, and Sarah Shaw was the runner up. Hope Shaw was third in the 300 hurdles.
Steen finished the 100-meter sprint in second place, just ahead of Jeska Birkmaier. Mathias ran her best 100 of the season.
The girls short relay team took second place.
Sophomore Jennifer Wood led the girls on the field. She made the second best shot put throw, and took third in discus. Steen was second in the high jump, McFetridge was second in long jump. Senior Stephanie Hunter made her best javelin throw of the season.
Next, Enterprise will compete May 5 at Elgin.
