Fishtrap, Inc., the nonprofit organization with the goal of promoting clear thinking and good writing, has grown far beyond its original role of hosting the annual Fishtrap Gathering writers workshops and conference at Wallowa Lake every summer.
That event, well-known in the literary community throughout the West, will explore the theme Migrations and Passages during its 24th year at Wallowa Lake July 10-17.
The literary organization now also sponsors writers-in-residence in the community and local schools, Friday College classes, a radio storytelling program, childrens book-writing workshops, a writers’ retreat on the Imnaha, readings by visiting authors and a community Big Read centered around one book each year.
The Summer Fishtrap Gathering and the workshops that precede it remain the organizations largest yearly undertaking. This year, the workshops are July 10-15, while the gathering is set for July 14-17.
For more information, including this year’s faculty and how to register: www.fishtrap.org or call 541-426-3623.
Most of the summer Fishtrap event is open only to those who have registered, open microphone readings during the workshops are open to the public.
A new addition to the Coffin House, Fishtrap’s headquarters at 400 E. Grant St., Enterprise, is the Alvin M. and Betty Josephy Library of Western History and Culture, based on books and papers left to Fishtrap by one of its founders, the late author and historian Alvin Josephy Jr. Volunteers are cataloging books, building a library blog, and working to make the material available to researchers and the public.
