A popular spot is the Wallowa Lake State Recreation Area at the end of Highway 82. Mixed among tent sites and RV hookups in the wilderness are laundry facilities, as well as cabins with hot showers and flush toilets. A few sites are accessible to campers with disabilities.
The state park is next to Wallowa Lake Marina, which offers boat rental and fishing supplies. The surrounding area, tucked at the base of three mountains (Howard, Bonneville and Chief Joseph), includes restaurants, a tramway to the top of Mount Howard and the start of many hiking trails.
To reserve a campsite, call 800-452-5687 or go online (www.oregonstateparks.org).
Staying in the southern half of the county, Wallowa Mountain Loop Road leads to more campgrounds, some along the South Fork Imnaha River.
The Lions Club in Wallowa maintains a park for tents and RVs free of charge. Fire pits and picnic tables are scattered around the campground. It is located on the edge of downtown Wallowa. If you drive east on Highway 82, turn left onto Bear Creek Road after the train tracks. The park is open from spring to fall. Access is free, though the Lions Club appreciates donations for maintenance. For more information, call Ron King at his archery shop, 541-886-9110.
The Wallowa Valley Stay and Wash also has campsites. Located on the north side of Wallowa, the quiet park has 17 graveled hook-ups. Call Jan and Lorraine Swift at 541-886-6944.
On Highway 3 in Enterprise, Log House RV Park, 541-426-4027, includes some tent sites.
Off Highway 3, turn onto Charolais Road and take the Forest Services gravel roads to Red Hill Lookout, Buckhorn Lookout and Indian Village Grove. Several campgrounds are located in between.
Meanwhile, RVers visiting the county wont have trouble finding full hookups with many amenities: cable TV, laundry, bathrooms and showers.
Starting in the west, on Whiskey Creek Road, the Wallowa River RV Park, 541-886-7002, has 31 spaces. In Troy is the Shilo Oasis Resort, 541-828-7741.
In Joseph is Five Peaks RV Park, 541-432-4605. On Imnaha Highway is Imnaha Motel & RV Park, 541-577-3111.
Or continue to Park at the River, 541-432-8800, and Scenic Meadows RV Park, 541-432-9285.
