Baseball season is about to start before the Wallowa-Imbler team is ready. Several of the of last years Cats graduated, opening up many positions. However, many of the boys are still recuperating from the recently concluded basketball season. And head coach Warren Wilson was forced to step aside because of an illness in his family. Bill Robb took over. Inclement weather has limited practices, but the Cats first game will be on March 17 at Pilot Rock.
Were still putting people in the holes, Robb said. Well be feeling things out over at Pilot Rock.
The Cats have a few proven pitchers: Junior Andrew Fullerton, sophomore Wesley Conrad and junior Wes McDaniel. Fullerton last year worked 29 innings and struck out 30 batters. Conrad had 18 strikeouts over 28 innings. McDaniel threw seven innings with six strikeouts. Robb said Micah Johnson has thrown well in practice.
The batting lineup features several veteran hitters. Senior Cody Green last year hit eight doubles. Senior Billy Lee scored 10 runs. Senior Conner Evans managed four hits. Junior Chris Wilks scored nine runs. Sophomore Casey Robertson hit a double.
Meanwhile, the Cats recruited more players. Senior Tyler Chrisman has practiced, along with junior Derek Shike and sophomore Kody Swift.
The Cats first game March 17 at Pilot Rock will begin at 4 p.m.
