Five boys on the Enterprise-Wallowa wrestling team Jan. 15 competed in the finals of various weight classes at the Maniac Tournament, a high school playoff in Orofino, Idaho. Trent Martin, a 189-pound senior in his first season on the mat, won a championship. The rest settled for second place, while others scored several wins over two days.
I see a lot of improvement by my kids, coach Mel Byers said. Theyre starting to understand the things we teach. Theyre beginning to take the next step to a more advanced level.
Enterprise-Wallowa was one of the best teams out of 12 at Orofino. The gym included four mats. The first days action was preliminary, each boy working as many as four matches. That was followed by a tournament. Everybody was busy over two days.
The championship round featured five representatives of Enterprise-Wallowa. Martin took first place in the 189-pound bracket. Others included freshman Luke Moore at 112 pounds, sophomore Austin Reimer at 119, Matayas Nagy 171 and junior Erich Roepke 215.
Meanwhile, several more teammates performed well. Freshman Caden Christman at 103 pounds won two of his matches, as did junior Jordan Widener at 189. Other victorious teammates included sophomore Spencer Shelton (11), senior Forrest Cox (130), sophomore John Green (140), freshman Justin Gladden (140) and sophomore Jacob Curtis (275).
