Season to warm up for Lostine River Run July 3

Summer is on the way for the 28th annual Lostine River Run.

Every year, around Independence Day, more than 100 men and women of all ages from all around this region come to pristine Lostine for some exercise. Starting from the old Lostine School, they walk or run a mile or five kilometers along the river in the canyon. Last year, almost 40 of them ran 10K. Terry Johnson of La Grande took home a first-place plaque from the 10K, his time at 35 minutes and 47.6 seconds.

This year’s Lostine River Run, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Wallowa County, will happen the morning of Saturday, July 3. The school will be race headquarters. Participants, already registered, can check in at 7 a.m. That’s also the time for more to sign up. Buses will leave at 8:15 a.m. to the starting line for the 5K and the 10K. All races start at 9 a.m.

The first two miles of the 10K include rolling hills, before the course levels off and eases downhill. The 5K is mostly flat, with a small hill. The single mile goes in and around the city.

Registration is possible online. Eastern Oregon Sports Training LLC manages the event. Visit the website, www.eosportstraining.com. Click on “Events” and then “July 3 – Lostine River Run.” The information page has forms to download, as well as a link to www.active.com.

For the 10K and the 5K, early registration has a fee of $15. The single mile costs $10. Commemorative T-shirts are available. Size XXL costs $10, all other sizes $8.

Registration forms that are mailed must be received before June 26. The deadline for online registration is July 1. Participants can sign up the day of the race, for another $5.
