With two-and-a-half weeks to go, contributions are seriously lagging to finance “Shake the Lake,” the Wallowa County’s Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza on Wallowa Lake, and the family-oriented event’s future is in jeopardy.
If another $4,900 isn’t raised before the holiday, the Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce will be forced to make up the difference to fulfill an $8,500 contract with Homeland Fireworks, Inc., according to Vicki Searles, chamber executive director.

That would siphon money from other chamber projects and this year’s fireworks likely would be the county’s last, she said.
So far, $3,600 has been contributed, primarily by traditional sponsors such as the county, the chamber and Joseph Chamber Business Association. Any business or individual donating $25 or more will be entered in a drawing to win a Snake River jet-boat trip for two, and there will be bingo games.
