Free Fishing Day needs help

Every kid can win a prize.

Alan Miller, who coordinates Free Fishing Day, scheduled for June 12 at Marr Pond in Enterprise, encourages local merchants to make donations. The annual event provides 80 to 100 boys and girls with a day of fishing, crafts and outdoor education. Many youngsters leave with their first catch, lessons learned and some treasure: a pole, a tackle box or another fishing related item. With a limited operating budget, organizers rely on volunteers and contributions. Last year, the local community donated about $1,400 in merchandise, services and supplies.

“Our most pressing need is for prizes for the kids, to ensure that everybody goes home with a prize,” Miller said. Besides fishing equipment, he suggested other ideas: gift certificates for activities or merchandise for kids, ages 3 to 15.

Cash donations would go toward more prizes and help the event. Donations are tax deductible, ID No. 91-1794627. Wallowa Resources handles bookkeeping. Make checks payable to Wallowa Resources – 2010 Free Fishing Day.

Volunteers are welcomed to assists young anglers with equipment and techniques. For more information, call Miller at 541-426-5682.
