Junior varsity boys keep developing in shadows

Months of training paid off in the end.

Dustyn Britton, a junior at Wallowa High School, finished a season of junior varsity basketball by tallying 10 points Feb. 12 at home. Powder Valley’s team won the game, 74-41.

Joining Britton in the scorebook, junior Tyler Chrisman ended up with 8 points. Freshman Wesley Conrad scored 7 points, while sophomore Justin Gladden converted seven foul shots. Wallowa also took Tyler Gockley’s 3 points. Sophomore Chris Wilks and freshman Austin Burns each chipped in a field goal. Junior Conner Evans and sophomore Zachary Cherry each made a free throw.

Around the county, JV squads had developed in the shadows. Wallowa’s boys learned while the varsity climbed up to the state championship final. Enterprise focused on its bigger team, which sneaked into the district tournament with a playoff. And Joseph’s small roster, forcing several boys to play both levels, made the difference between the two hard to distinguish.

The following is a collection of reports on JV.

Hot-shooting Chrisman’s three wins OTTyler Chrisman’s last basket was the most important.

The Wallowa High School junior scored 32 points Feb. 6 at Joseph for junior varsity. His performance included six baskets from three-point range, the last happening in overtime. It put the JV Cougars ahead of the Eagles by a score of 68-64. They held on to win, 69-67.

Wallowa also used freshman Wesley Conrad’s 9 points, three coming on one basket. Sophomore Justin Gladden hit another shot from long distance, and wound up netting 7 points. Sophomore Dusty McDaniel, freshman Pierce Millar and Tyler Gockley each contributed 4 points. Junior Conner Evans had 3 points. sophomore Zachary Cherry, sophomore Chris Wilks and freshman Austin Burns added 2 points, apiece.

Meanwhile, sophomore Riley Steen led Joseph with his 30 points. Sophomore Lucas Staigle had 8 points, and junior Matt Doud had 7. Junior Forrest Watson, junior Trent Martin, sophomore Dakoda Shadle and Maxime LeLannou ended up with 5 points, each. Sophomore Anthony Smallen chipped in a couple of foul shots.

The Eagles, down 32-20 at halftime, rallied after the break. They eventually took the Cougars into an extra period, as Shadle banked a layup with 3.3 seconds left in the game.

Masters dominates Heppner’s JV for 14Junior J.R. Masters scored 14 points Feb. 5 at Enterprise High School, as the JV boys lost to Heppner by a score of 45-30.

Freshman Cody Duquette converted a basket from three-point range for the home team. He totaled 9 points, while sophomore Duncan Christman had 5 and freshman Dustin Dean 2.

JV Eagles make short work of Pine EagleAfter just 16 minutes, the JV Eagles were done with Pine Eagle.

Joseph High School’s junior varsity basketball team won Jan. 29 at home, as it scored a 32-15 decision over the boys from Halfway. The game was abbreviated to a pair of eight-minute halves – equivalent to a couple of quarters in a regular game.

For Joseph, sophomore Riley Steen found enough time to produce 13 points. Junior Trent Martin put up 8 points, and sophomore Lucas Staigle had 6. Sophomore Anthony Smallen and Maxime LeLannou each chipped in a basket, while sophomore Dakoda Shadle converted in a foul shot.

JV Outlaws sneak from behindThe JV Outlaws were at their best in the final minutes.

Pilot Rock’s basketball team clung to a 32-31 advantage Jan. 23 in Enterprise at the start of the fourth quarter, but the home team rallied to win a 49-42 decision.

For the Outlaws, junior J.R. Masters scored 20 points. Freshman Cody Duquette beat the buzzer at the end of the first period, and totaled 12 points. Junior Sean Dean added 8 points, and freshman Dustin Dean had 4. Junior Carson Makin and sophomore Duncan Christman each chipped in a field goal, while freshman Joseph Harshman sank one foul shot.

Eagles finish what they startThe JV Eagles finished what they started.

Jan. 22 at Wallowa High School’s basketball court, Joseph jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first half of an abbreviated game. The Eagles held on to beat the home team, 25-17.

Sophomore Dakoda Shadle scored 8 points for Joseph. Sophomore Anthony Smallen posted 6 points. Junior Forrest Watson nailed a shot from three-point range. He totaled 5 points. Sophomore Lucas Staigle had 4, and freshman Austin Wells chipped in a basket.

For Wallowa, junior Tyler Chrisman netted 5 points. Those included a three-point basket. The Cougars also took offense from junior Conner Evans, junior Dustyn Britton, sophomore Chris Wilks, freshman Wesley Conrad and Tyler Gockley.

The Wallowa High School freshman’s only field goal added three points to the basketball team’s score Jan. 15 at home, where the JV defeated Pine Eagle in a 24-16 decision. The game was shortened to eight-minute halves.

Junior Dustyn Britton was the home team’s top scorer, with 7 points. Junior Tyler Chrisman added 6 points, sophomore Justin Gladden 5, freshman Welsey Conrad 2.

Junior leads JVJ.R. Masters, a junior at Enterprise High School, scored 16 points Jan. 8 for the junior varsity basketball team. Irrigon won the game, 53-46.

Enterprise also had freshman Cody Duquette netting 11 points. Sophomore Duncan Christman posted 8 points, freshman Joseph Harshman had 5, freshman Dustin Dean 4 and junior Carson Makin made a basket.

Enterprise High School’s JV basketball team went on a scoring spree Dec. 15 at home, where it defeated Wallowa in a 48-22 margin.

Duquette ended up with the highest total: 12 points. Christman’s 11 included a three-pointer. Dean contributed 11 of his own. Meanwhile, junior J.R. Masters scored 6 points, junior Randal Rystrom had 4, junior Carson Makin 2 and freshman Dustin Dean 2.

For Wallowa, freshman Pierce Millar had 9 points. His offense included a three-pointer, as did junior Dustyn Britton’s total of 6 points. Junior Conner Evans had 5 points, and freshman Austin Burns 2.
