Wallowa County’s girls won both of their basketball games Feb. 18 in the first round of Old Oregon’s tournament at Baker High School.
Sophomore Rebekah Jamerson scored 18 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for Wallowa, as the fourth-place Lady Cougars defeated the Powder Valley Badgers by the score of 57-48 in a rematch. Last week at Wallowa, the final game of the regular season, Powder Valley spoiled the home team’s bid at third place.
The tournament carried much more weight. By winning, the Cougars extended their season at least two more games. Next, they will challenge first-place Imbler on Feb. 19 in a semifinal. Another win would put them the following night in the championship game; a loss still gives them another shot at third place and a spot in another tournament, this time for the state championship.
By beating Powder Valley, Wallowa also finished the Badgers’ season.
Meanwhile, Joseph’s team also added at least two more games by defeating Cove, 42-36. Junior Jesse Kohlhepp totaled 17 points, including a couple of three-point baskets. In the semifinals, Joseph will play against Pine Eagle.
