Lady Outlaws catch second wind, run over Irrigon

The Lady Outlaws haven’t lost a step.

After almost three months of basketball, the girls at Enterprise High School can still run their full-court press, non-stop. That’s exactly what they did Feb. 12 at home, where they hassled Union’s bigger team (including the four tallest girls on the court) enough to force overtime. But the extra period gave the visitors enough of a break, and they wound up defeating the Outlaws by the score of 43-37. Three days later, however, Enterprise continued running at Irrigon and brought home a 45-35 victory.

“We work on our conditioning a lot in practice so we can be a good running team whenever we need to be,” sophomore Shelby Graning said. “We want the advantage of being one of the teams in the best shape.”

The win at Irrigon boosted the Outlaws’ overall record to 14-9. Their mark in Blue Mountain Conference improved to 8-6.

Combining both games, senior Summer De Spain totaled 36 points for Enterprise. Freshman Marta Stangel scored 18 points, sophomore Shelby Graning had 10 points, senior Sarah Butterfield 8 and junior Karli McCarthy 6. Meanwhile, senior Joscelyn Stangel contributed a basket and junior Alex McCadden converted two of her free throws.

Next, the Outlaws will go to Pendleton on Feb. 19 for the district’s post-season tournament. Ranked fourth, Enterprise will face the winner of a playoff between Irrigon and Elgin. Already this season, the Outlaws have won all four games against both teams.
