Joseph High School’s basketball team captured its first victory.

Sophomore Trevor Lewis scored 24 points Dec. 12 for the Eagles, as they defeated the Grizzlies of Griswold (Helix) by the score of 57-48, in a consolation of the Winter Classic at Enterprise.

“This was probably our best game of the season,” said junior Ian Baynes, who scored 17 points.

The Eagles improved their record to 1-4.

Joseph’s offense also used 8 points from junior Matt Doud. He got three on a long shot he swished, just as the halftime buzzer sounded. He put the Eagles ahead, 27-20, going into the break. Junior Zach Staidle finished the game with 5 points, sophomore Anthony Smallen 3.

“Today, we just shot the ball like we weren’t afraid to,” coach Ron Lathrop said. “We can shoot; we just have to do it.”

The Eagles won on the heels of two frustrating losses. Enterprise dealt the first one: an 80-30 decision, Dec. 8 at Joseph’s Sather Court. Lewis managed 12 points, junior Forest Watson had 5, Doud 4 and Smallen 4. Baynes made a basket, while Staidle sank a foul shot.

Three days later, the first round of the Winter Classic, the Ione Cardinals topped the Eagles by the score of 80-40. Lewis tallied 16 points, Baynes 11, Stadle 8, Smallen 4.

This weekend, Joseph will begin a busy schedule before the holiday. On Dec. 18 and 19, Sather Court will hold the Joseph Education Foundation Tournament. Helix, Adrian and Wallowa will bring their teams for a weekend full of action. Then, the Eagles will drive Dec. 21 to Condon. That is followed the next day by a trip to Echo.
